Trip No. 4

Trip No. 4

Rolling right along with the Tom Cobbs archive, we crack open Trip No. 4. The first two directories were straight shots—one roll each from Pikes Peak. Then came Trip No. 3, a left hook out of nowhere: Mickey Thompson, Challenger I, and a stretch of salt that changed everything. So now the question—what the hell is hiding in Trip 4?

Turns out, we’re back at Pikes Peak. Another full roll, and given the cars and drivers, this one is without question from 1959. The shots range from pure racing heat—stock cars and sports cars tearing up the mountain—to quieter candids of Cobbs’ crew just hanging around, greasy and grinning.

Notable names? You bet. Nick Sanford Jr. in the #99 car. Louis Unser in #92. Ed Colt in #171. And the ever-mad Ak Miller in his Olds-powered #11 Devin.

The action shots are great—dust, throttle, chaos—but I’m drawn more to the candids. There’s just something about those unguarded moments. Anybody recognize the faces in Tom’s circle? I swear some of them feel familiar, but my face-blind brain won’t connect the dots.

In any case, we’ve only got a few more “Trip” directories before we start sliding into other corners of Cobbs’ world—Bonneville, drag strips, the dry lakes, and who knows what else. I haven’t peeked yet, but judging by the folder names… we’re in for some real joy, boys. Buckle up.
