Film of the Week: Andy Southard Jr’s Home Movies
East Coast transplant Andy Southard arrived in Central California’s Salinas area in the early 1950s- A prime time for the young photographer to document the hot rod and custom car scene between San Francisco and Los Angeles. Speed & Kulture has been granted Southard Jr.’s archives, and recently uploaded one of Andy’s 8mm color home movies from 1961, and it is absolutely fantastic. A yearly meeting of the Bay Area and L.A. Roadster Clubs would take place half way between the two areas, and this footage labeled “Balado Park (near Monterey) & Pismo Beach (140 miles to the south)” has plenty of shots cruising Highway 101, along the beach, and at one of the host hotels. As a bonus, you get a quick moment with the HAMB’s own Flat-Top Bob showing his Owens/Cusey Deuce roadster, as it’s seen in the footage. Check it out:
