Hot Rod Racing in the 40s – Now in COLOR!

This amazing dirt track footage has been around for over a decade now, and well-documented here on the Jalopy Journal. Shot by cinematographer Elmer Dyer (best known for Howard Hughes’ Hells Angels) around 1946 or ’47, it features hot rod dirt track cars in action. This was likely a stock footage film that was never utilized, but shows a very young Jim Rathmann who went on to win the Indy 500 in 1960.

Someone has recently colorized this great slice of hot rod history and upgraded to 60fps, and even though they colored some tires red, and left other things black & white, it’s still worth sharing again. If you’ve somehow never seen this film before, boy are you in for a treat…
