Ask Me, Don’t Tell Me…

Dig this 1961 documentary called Ask Me, Don’t Tell Me about derelict teens in ‘Jacket Clubs’, filmed on the mean streets of San Francisco. Set to some real gone beatnik music, this one is lighter on custom cars but heavy on cool club jackets! So the question is, are these J.D.s actual hot rodders, or just posers? Some of the jackets shown are definitely representing car clubs, so not sure why we don’t see more of them doing ‘car stuff’ instead of just standing around on the street or dancing in juke joints… Part of this might have been their economic situation. I also imagine that in a densely-populated, non-car-friendly town like S.F., perhaps these particular Juvenile Delinquents simply had less opportunities and outlets to be building hot rods or drag racing, than if they grew up in a Bay Area suburb.
