Wheels of Color
The January 1958 issue of Motor Life featured a young George Barris with the latest in custom wheel covers: Bullets, fins, and enamel-colored chrome! Hollywood Flipper caps had been standard fare with customized cars even in the prewar era, but by the late 50s, large bullets attached to Fiesta or Lancer wheel covers with additional flippers added were quite common. However, one ‘wheely’ neat trend that never really caught on for very long is featured below: Translucent candy colors applied to the caps. Looks like a pretty cool way to stand out from the crowd of 50s style customs these days, so I wonder why we don’t see this treatment more often?
