Perfect Flames

Perfect Flames

A few years ago I was bullshitting with Lee Pratt about flames. At the time, he was working on flaming his deuce and studying a lot of historical cars for inspiration. In passing, he mentioned he really liked the flames on Jim Avery’s Corvette.

I was unfamiliar, but for some reason I shook my head in affirmation and made a mental note to research later. The notion passed with time and it wasn’t until I got an email this morning that I thought of that name again.

“Hey Ryan, do you have any shots of Jim Avery’s Corvette in your archive? I’ve been searching for weeks and all I can find is this single shot from the 1960 Hartford Autorama program.”

Quick answer – I don’t have any other photos. I do, however, have a clue as to why photos of the car are hard to come by. I found this in the December 5, 1961 issue of the Waterbury Republican Newspaper:

“A local automotive enthusiast escaped injury after his modified Corvette slid off Tucker Hill Road on Sunday. The driver, Jim Avery, was charged with reckless driving although no other vehicles were involved.”

I do know our Jim Avery was from Waterbury and we’ve already established he owned a “modified” Corvette, so… Damn.

I will say it seems as though Jim was/is my kind of guy. Anyone willing to tear ass down old Tucker Hill Road in a flamed Corvette is A-OK by me.
