The Dan Gurney 1961 Impala

The Dan Gurney 1961 Impala

This one doesn’t really fall in the ‘custom’ car category in the traditional sense of the word, but it definitely qualifies as a ‘sleeper’ in the racing world, so here goes. He was the consummate American racer, engineer, builder, hot rodder, and dare I say a racing icon… Dan Gurney. I feel so fortunate to have met him and had dinner together only a few years before he passed away.

The story goes is Dan ordered this ’61 Impala SS with the new 409 c.i. V8 motor, Police-spec heavy duty suspension and brakes, with the intent of racing it in the British Saloon Car Championship. He was already going to be in the UK racing in Formula 1, so why not have a little fun while you’re across the pond, right? Knowing the car was much heavier than the 3.8 Jags he would be trading paint with, Gurney adding cooling ducts to keep those HD brakes in check, Corvette sway bars, wider OEM steel wheels, and a few tweaks to the motor.
