Bob Gurr- The Gearhead of Disneyland
Ever wonder who designed the original cars for Autopia? How about the 3/4 scale Main Street vehicles like the fire engine, double-decker bus and jalopy? Even the original Monorail or the Matterhorn Bobsleds? The man is question is Bob Gurr, retired Imagineer and Disney Legend who worked for the Mouse nearly 40 years and said “If it moves on wheels at Disneyland, I probably designed it”. Bob first worked for Walt in 1954, a year before the Park open consulting on the design for the very first Autopia cars. Disney was so impressed with Gurr’s mechanical knowledge and eye for design, he hired him to work for WED Enterprises (AKA Walt Disney Imagineering) full time, and the rest is history. The September Road and Track, October 1955 Hot Rod magazine and November 1955 Rod & Custom all had full feature articles on Bob’s fiberglass-bodied Autopia cars, showing the heavy influence these little roadsters had on popular car culture at the time… All thanks to ‘Gurrhead’ named Bob!
