A Car Show, A Drag Race, and a Hill Climb in 1959

A Car Show, A Drag Race, and a Hill Climb in 1959

This 8mm color home movie footage is a fantastic find from three separate events, apparently all shot in 1959. If your a motorcycle guy too, you in luck, as the car show and drag racing footage have plenty of bikes, and the hill climb is nothing but motorcycles.

First up is a Southern California (Norwalk? Lynwood?) car show, including footage of George Sein’s ’32 coupe, Floyd DeBore’s Watson-painted 58 Pontiac, and a ton of other late 50s hot rods and Kustoms that you might recognize. There are so many great rides in this short clip, I found myself scrubbing backwards over and over. The car show abruptly ends at 3:43 and we move onto racing footage from Lions Drag Strip where it’s mainly single car runs for some reason. A few vehicles of note are the severely chopped ’39 Ford coupe and Joe Maillard’s famous Sidewinder ‘Ole’ in the early days. We go to a few seconds of random baby footage and at 7:13 we begin the motorcycle hill climb. Enjoy!
