An Afternoon Of Terrific Punishment

An Afternoon Of Terrific Punishment

Forgive me… I seem to be obsessing on old videos as of late. It’s a healthy phase I think and one I should be growing out of soon. Until then though, I really think you fellas are going to enjoy this one.

Gilmore Stadium was built just outside and sort of between Beverly Hills and West Hollywood, CA. It was opened in May of 1934 with plans to host everything from stock car racing to football games. Many of you know it as the venue where midget racing was born and where Vic Edelbrock and Roger Ward finally brought down the mighty Offy. By most accounts, Gilmore was a magical place cloaked in the innocence of pre and post-war optimism.

I’ve seen plenty of imagery from the stadium and have heard my share of stories. Even so, there is something about watching grainy motion pictures while listening to a stoic narration that… well, makes everything seem as it should be. I’m a realist. I know it was probably incredibly dusty (I hate dust) and just bearable for even the most sick of auto freaks, but in 2009 it seems absolutely perfect. Here’s to Gilmore Stadium…
