Drag Racing in the Basement?

I’ve always dug vintage slot car sets, but it’s usually the early Aurora or Tyco sets running 60s style sports cars and grand prix racers. Thumbing through the December 1958 issue of Rod & Custom, I was amazed to discover completely home-built 1/30th scale electric dragsters running down a ‘14.8 foot long drag strip… Equalling a scaled down 1/4 mile. Along with a return strip, staging area, pits and spectator section(!) the entire footprint is about 20 feet long. With the u-turn at the end of the run, the two cars can run the quarter side by side, with enough track to decelerate, and then turn around, heading back to the pits- All under their own power. I was also in awe of the variety of drag car styles they’ve built, including a tall T, Deuce sedan, and a ’34 coupe. Were these kit-bashed from plastic model kits or actually made from scratch? Either way, this looks like some good fun!
