Tucker Stock Car

Tucker Stock Car

The fellas over at Hemmings recently uncovered the fascinating photo above. Your eyes aren’t deceiving – that’s an honest-to-goodness Tucker Torpedo all dressed up to go racing. They seem to think the photo was taken in 1950 at Canfield Speedway (Youngstown, OH). Records indicate the rarity was driven by Joe Merola of Pennsylvania, but finished dead last with zero laps completed.

The reason behind the “DNF” isn’t clear. Was it the legality of running a non-production car in a NASCAR class race? Was it an “after-the-fact” publicity stunt by Preston Tucker’s cronies? Or maybe it was just a simple techincal problem… Whatever the case, it’s certainly a nice mystery to ponder.
