1958 NHRA Nationals… Oklahoma City

To honor the upcoming HAMB Drags, it seems like a good time to show some vintage color racing footage you may have missed before. The well-known NHRA ‘Ingenuity In Action’ film from 1958 has made the rounds a few times, but this amateur silent footage from the same year is worth a look.

For the second time, Oklahoma City was the NHRA Nationals location in 1958, and it had grown so quickly in popularity from the previous year that the entires had to be limited to 500 which they hit a month in advance. In this footage you’ll see everything from Topolino Gassers to rail jobs, stock late model Chevys, and plenty of hot rod coupes, roadsters and sedans… Even the occasion Sports Car. The owners of this film did a great job of identifying the drivers and cars they recognize, which helps fill in the puzzle a bit…
