Pikes Peak

Pikes Peak

Sometime around 1915, Spencer Penrose was putting the finishing touches on his life’s work – “Pikes Peak Highway.” After making the pass passable by widening and leveling the road, Spencer decided he needed a marketing catch to get tourist to trust his vision. “The Race To The Clouds” was announced and the rest is history.

To this day, Pikes Peak remains one of the most entertaining automotive events in the country. Watching these nut cases scream around the course just inches from doom is nothing less than breath taking. It’s a sport and a way to die.

With all of that drama to comprehend, I’ve never really spent much time considering the history of the event. It wasn’t until Drewfus sent me a link to these historical galleries that I even realized its history was worth studying. And boy is it…

Enjoy the imagery. (The website is a little tricky to navigate, but be sure to check out all of the galleries from the 1910s, 1920s, 1930s, 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s. It’s worth your time.)
