Projects Willys PU build....from sedan panels.

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by Kiwi Kev, Apr 22, 2012.

  1. Heck, one has to admire Kev's workmanship on your Willy's, just look at that so straight perfect firewall and the overall tidyness of everything. Bloody awesome aye.

  2. I think the satisfaction part is seeing your work, in this case a tune up, give you the intended results you were looking for. I know that's how it is with me, even if I went slower it was a positive result from my actions……just the wrong way…ha ha ha

Had a couple of free weekends so thought I'd get the Small Block fitted in place, just had to place the blower on top for a photo opportunity.
Not a massive amount of work to do get it up and running, make some headers and new throttle linkage, reroute the fuel line and a bit of wiring for the electric water pump.
Always wanted a blown Gasser and at last I can say I've got one.

I love the rough cast look on a blower, it looks ALL business... tough!

Thanks for all the positive comments , lets hope it goes as good as it looks. :)
Cast finish blowers always look more purposeful to me just gotta get the scoop blasted to match.
I'd really like a wide mouth Hilborn scoop but that means more $$$ so I'll go with what I've got.
Someday I'll ditch the carbs and have a 4 port Hilborn on there......... :D

  10. Wish my blower was not polished but it's all together and I'm not taking it apart..

Decided to give the interior a bit of a makeover so I stripped the dashboard out of the truck and treated it to a few coats of rattlecan metallic copper paint, while I was at it I fitted a larger Stewart Warner oil pressure gauge that I can see easier from the drivers seat and replaced the ammeter with a SW blower boost gauge.
As I'm using a Vertex Magneto now I changed the key ignition switch for a mag kill switch and a push button starter.
Got hold of some aircraft style rivets to put it all back together again.
I'll get some seat covers and door cards made up in metallic copper vinyl like the blower scoop cover when funds allow.

I awoke WAY to early this morning and found myself on the HAMB
Searching build threads as I enjoy seeing everyones creativity.
So this is the first time I noticed this Willys build.
Great Build And I'm amazed at what guys can do with just a bunch of junk lying around. Like the Brit with the Beatedeuce build
I know Kiwi Kev must be proud to see the truck being raced
This is so cool that you managed a high 12 pass with this rig.
I like the name a lot, but I was thinking "Racestoleum" as it popped in my head when you mounted the radiator puke tank.

Finally got around to putting the Daisy Mags and M&H Racemasters on the truck, still not sure about them but as the tires have been mounted and refuse to come off again looks like they are here to stay..............for the time being at least, they're a little too wide for my liking but I'll see what they look like outside and from a distance.
Treated the inside of the doors to a coat of metallic copper and made some door panels out of stucco finish aluminum to tie in with the dash panel that Kev fitted, a cheaper alternative to upholstered panels for the time being. Didn't realise at the time but they appear to have a diamond pattern on them.
Headers should be finished soon then I can get her fired up:)

Looks great Ray, have you seen the rules about tyre sticking out, I think it's next year it changes but it's worth checking.

Thanks Steve, yeah I saw that and had a measure up, I'm just inside the new rule.
Who ever heard of Gassers with tyres sticking out the rear fenders eh?;)
My solution would be to put an inch wider rear fenders on if it were a problem.
BTW, picked up my FX3 taxi front axle yesterday.

Your additions to Kev's terrific base are fitting right in. Both of you Gent's have a great eye for the "look".
And for what it's worth, tires sticking out is traditional...

  22. I like the wheels, door panels etc Ray, she's looking good! Good times ahead.

Thanks for the compliment, it was a terrific base to work with.
Tires sticking out just scream old gasser to me.

Glad you approve Kev, I'm really looking forward to this season.

Sounds great, bet you're itching to get back out there.
I reckon I'm a couple of weeks away from fire up now. Been distracted with every day mundane stuff.
    Will post an update soon.
