How about some "factory built" pipes. I'll probably cut them up and use them to build or modify other headers withl headers.jpg headers 2.jpg

    I've wondered the same thing.

There seems to be a lot of pictures of cars from that era from around South Texas . Maybe it was a local style? Although I have seen pictures of long-headered cars from other places too. Maybe various people just thought it looked cool.

Or, maybe it had something to do with Ed Iskenderian's, "5th cycle" cams - helped scavenge exhaust?

I'm just guessing. Anyone know for sure?

  14. Longer tubes on say a set of zoomies would move your power band down a little bit in the RPM range.

A set of zoomies like are the most popular these days have a tendency to make it lay down on the bottom end where as a longer tube will salvage a little bit of the bottom end while giving up a little on top.

I am not sure that is why we are seeing them in this thread but that is the basic theory behind it.

What would tapered headers do to the power band or scavenge effects?

I believe the Ramchargers used tapered pipes (megaphones) because of a technical paper Norton put out about the optimum length and taper on their motorcycle pipes. But I could be wrong. I don't think you'll ever get individual pipes to scavenger like a header with a collector on it.

  19. You are correct PB. This is the "organ pipe" principle. Longer tubes will have a lower resonant frequency. At a certain frequency the natural resonance will put a negative pressure at the exhaust port at the proper time to match the exhaust stroke of a certain engine RPM. So, longer pipes are "tuned" to a lower engine speed.

A tapered pipe, I've read lowers the exhaust note.
