  1. Uh, OK. Of course there were many race cars built with extensive rivet construction through the 60's, I didn't get the connection based just on the Maserati reference though :)

  5. Platypus ???

It's the same same only its different.
Head is to hat like hood or bonnet. Now Why the hell does head and engine have to to with , err ,,, yeah. You get it. Head covering.

Flanks is to side like wings and fenders.
Old style fenders stuck out like wings and flap like crazy. Fender for car parts is only North American

Our beloved & historical racing term "Gasser" has been stolen by the diesel truck guys for a derogatory dig at non diesel powered vehicles. No one here agrees on that.

I vote to let them have it!

  7. To please everyone, we will now call the bonnet " the front bit", the boot will be called "the back bit", the donk will be called "the noisy bit", the dizzy will be "the spinning bit", the carby is now the "sucking bit", and the diff will be the "back wheels bit". I like platypussies, but I could not eat a whole one.

  9. Why do people say Wee-and, when it says ,right on the manifold "Say Why-and" ?

  10. The problem with calling wheels, "rims" or heaven forbid, "rimz" is the confusion that it foments. A guy on the Jockey Journal was looking for 19 inch rim hoops. Some had no idea what he was talking about and the rest assumed he was looking for rubber rim strips. No, he insisted, I need rim hoops. Finally it was figured out. Since he calls wheels, "rims", he needed a new term for what is, in actuality, the rim, ergo the "rim hoop". I see people talking about their cars, with "wire rims", and I wonder what the spokes are made of.
What bugs me, besides the rim/wheel deal is the "roll pan". Back in the fifties and earlier, I suspect, we called them "rolled pans" because that's what they are. They rolled under the back of the car for a custom look. A "roll pan" is a cookie sheet........or is it a muffin tin??? ;)

  12. A roll pan ?
That's an air cleaner housing and muffin tins are carburetor parts cleaning/sorting trays. Cookie sheet doesn't have as tall of a lip.

Ok, I may not win any spelling bees, but it really bugs me when people can't spell PETERSEN, as in the Petersen Museum, it had to be printed on the cover of a billion issues of Hot Rod over the years. Bob

I suspect that "rims" came into use in the '60s, when tyres significantly wider than stock appeared. "Wide-rim wheels" were needed to mount wide tyres. "Wide-rims" soon became "wide rims" and hence "rims".

Language is indeed fascinating. A lot of it grows by someone coming up with a catchy turn of phrase, a fitting poetic metaphor, so much so that other people start to use it. There is a tricky point where a clever metaphor tips over into a fully-fledged new sense of a word.
