Yes Johnny was running away with the Langhorne race, then Jerry Hoyt lost it in turn 4 and blocked the upper half of the track. The big left turn didn't allow a lot of distant visibility. Thomson tried to power low but hooked the left front of hoyt's car and proceeded to snap roll down the front stretch.

A youtube exists of the crash.

Tom Malloy, son of Emmett who is holding the trophy with Vukovich at Pomona would love a copy of the photo. Would you be willing to send a scanned image (high resolution) to my e-mail account and I will forward to Tom. He has a museum in Southern California. Dan

That's about as good as it gets. All I have is basic MS photo software so I couldn't send anything much better than you can save/print.

This isn't a reply, but I'm looking for photos taken at Pomona Fairgrounds in 1956-57 when Stock Cars, with the likes of Sam Hanks and Troy Ruttman ran on the road race course. Let me know.

Another request. Looking for any photos of Emmett Malloy, race car owner and builder of Carrell Speedway.

I'm not sure exactly what happened but Hoyt received some kind of injury to his mouth or jaw in that crash. Whether it was from his impact with the guardrail or being hit by Thomson I don't know.

At any rate there was enough of a problem that by the time Jerry got to Oklahoma City a few weeks later his jaw was basically wired shut. He had raced on pavement since Langhorne but the dust at OKC was reportedly causing him to have trouble getting enough air during earlier Practice. Maybe he should have sat out the race but a racer is a racer and Jerry had won the last AAA race there.

yes RJC, he was whiplashed around. Could have broken a jaw. Prior to the impact with the 44, he was just a sitting duck in the groove.

Thanks Rootie for all your photos, bring back some old memories. Been looking for a frontal shot of a Watson dolly trailer (above) for quite some time. I have a never used front section to build one from.

Does anyone here on the west coast remember Eddie Balanger that built midgets, sprinters and big cars in the 40's thru 1953? He ran at Lincoln Heights, Culver City, Alantic Blvd. and Gilmore. Maybe others as I don't know???? He was my gramps, but I didn't ask him really too much about his past as a builder as he lost some great pals racing and considered himself lucky to be stay alive until 1990.

I have a "Big Car" with original company speed equipment on it, images of a 3/4 midget that he did in 1951-52, so I was going to make a mine a tribute to him with his name on the cowl much like the image posted, our company logo and Suzanne Williams as the driver as that is who I bought it from.

It's an early car but I can't find a lick of history on it even though it shows many scars from its time on the tracks, I'd post a pic, for some reason I never take any of it. If anyone has any history on my Gramps, let me know ;).
    Thx,
    CK

Saw Leroy racing midgets in Australia in the 60's. His sister was living right here in Brownsburg, IN about20 years ago.
