In the background of the Dick Linder pic is Mike Little's car. Notable by the rectangular roll bar. Early in the season at Williams Grove he ran over a wheel and rolled several times.

You can also see the update to the Vargo car with the torsion bar, eliminating the rear cross leaf spring.

    Any connection?
There was a Bob McManus who brought one of the pre-war Maseratis to the Speedway around 1950.

    Rotie,
is the altfater/shaw picture the old Schmidt kuzma?

  9. I have no idea why Tanker jackets are blue, or why they were called tanker jackets? I always thought they were some how from the air force. All I know is, if you didn't have one in West Covina, in the 60's you just were not cool!

You got that right Dean as it was the same deal in El Sereno in the 50's going to Wilson high

A suede jacket was the thing to have but they were plenty of bucks, so a Tanker jacket was still cool but just not quite the same but we did have 1/2 wide suede belts to fit those cool A1 Peggar pants

We were cool dudes dressing to the 9's to impress the girls in Poodle skirts

Dean I just did some looking on the web and it looks like the Army in WW2 made a cold weather coat in green , that looked just like our tanker jackets that we bought

The green army coats had a wool lining , and one ones we bought had a smooth quilted lining that was just perfect

And after the Korean war some tailors over there made some jackets like that, then someone here in the states made these up in blue to sell the in surplus store's as ' Tanker Jackets ' and the rest is history

The curtains were to force people to buy tickets, and come inside.

The picture of Johnny Thomson in Stearley's 6 was taken just before his fatal crash.

Rootie, is that picture of the great Johnny Thomson taken on the day he was killed ? if so, thats the same car the great Bill Schindler was killed in. at that time it was the Beal Offy. Johnny was my home time hero to me [Lowell, Ma.]. his sister Grace is my neighbor in my town.

Thomson in the Stearley 6, blew the right rear knobby. If you look at the picture, looks like the tire is cut already.

I saw a picture of the aftermath years ago.
