A great photo of the new rear drive Novi in 1956. Notice the pneumatic starter going into the side of the car and the compressed air bottle alongside. The original front drive Novis needed to be started from the side of the car since the transmission took up the space in front. And the gear ratio required to start the engine on a right angle made a high rpm air starter a natural choice. The side starting setup was retained when the cars went to rear drive although I think the Granatellis may have changed to front starting on the later cars after they did their redesign on the engine in the 1960s.
BTW that's long time Novi crew member Radio Gardner manning the starter while Jean Marcenac stands on the other side of the car. And although Paul Russo ended up driving this car in the 500 I believe that's Jimmy Davies in the cockpit. He drove both Novis in Practice in 1956 before he left the team after a dispute over money with owner Lew Welch. Davies wanted a higher prize money guarantee because of the poor finishing history of cars with the Novi engine in previous races. When Welch wouldn't go along Davies walked.
