Let's keep this thread alive. I love seeing all those track-nosed, Indy-inspired hot rods! I've been dreaming up a '32 sedan with a track nose called the "Red Tailed Hawk"... I'm collecting parts for it, but it's in the early stages of development.

A peek at what I'm working on. Maybe not 100% traditional but built on the CHEAP mostly from freebies, left overs and lots of weld filler. Definitely not cookie cutter. Shooting for a 60's show custom vibe.

Well I went through a lot of this stuff and I'm not even sure what to say as I try not to be offensive with casual observations. Sadly (or gladly) some of the stuff handles that on it's own so I don't have to. Maybe some things seem to repeat or follow because they simply work. Popularity shouldn't be confused with conformity, and the whole "...do it yourself..." gig really needs to be thought over sometimes. I've seen dozens of Deuce hiboy roadsters, many black, many on steelies, if there's a hood sometimes you can't tell them apart unless you know the car well. Then again I've seen some that don't begin to measure up to the sum of their parts let alone in any pleasant aesthetic way. The wheelbase gets fucked up, parts that don't go together and used "just because", ego vs engineering. Some of those guys wonder why they can't get a show win, a magazine spread, an invite to a particular event, or a sale price that's in the same zip code as a "proper" car. Don't think that I miss the thought of saying there's rules to building a proper hot rod. Whether we like it or not there is, sort of, no? That over chopped 3 or 5 window 33-4 Ford look? It actually came from something out of necessity and a spot of rule bending. The fact it looked kool and was worth repeating says something, right? It would look like ass if it was done on a full fendered billet rod though, right? Imagine a Ridler/GNRS build with a 7" chop and 20" wheels and an LS injected chevy. Add fake ostrich seat covers and frosty paint. Frankly it would look stupid. Rule breaker? All day. Right? Good? Engineered? The most polite reply to such a build would be "If you say so." This why something bold that was well engineered, well thought out, even if it does fit a set of parameters leaves impressions. I'm not nor ever will say follow the herd, but if you do stray away a bit it's nice to know you're the same species. Then again there's those who prefer to trampled over. At least it keeps things interesting. Well, sometimes...

That was Edsel Ford's third custom roadster, built at Ford to explore means of lowering and stretching the wheelbase without a lot of new tooling. It was the inspiration for the English-built Jensens, as well. The second photo, as you point out, was at a later time when the car had been privately customized. I think it's the last known photo of the car, which disappeared after that and has never been seen publicly since.
