What exactly did he say you were doing wrong? You can buy paint and equipment to spray it at any home center, would you have got the same warning for painting your patio furniture?

  2. Just finished one of these projects-20X20 home garage-Kind of like painting in a phone booth
Not the first thing I've painted-But-my first complete paint job-single stage urethane

    Attached Files:

  3. All of these were painted at home in a garage. I used an old DeVillbis gun that my uncle had back in the 50s and 60s for the Vettes. Both Vettes are acrylic lacquer. Used a TIP HVLP spray system to paint the yellow 56. The 56 is single stage urethane. Painted several more in either the garage or the driveway years ago but have no pics of them.

Don't use a supplied air hood with your shop compressor, oil vapors in your lungs can be deadly I'm told. When I was in the powder coating business I used an oilless compressor for my sand blasting hood. Worked very well for the 3 years I had the business. Doesn't take a big volume. I used a 3/8th air hose for supply and never had dusty boogers or smelled any dust.

No photos of the cars painted in the old days, but I never had a real paint booth. Everything was painted in a big old warehouse we rented to work on our cars.

This is my little boat & the only thing I've painted with fancy urethane. I shot this with Starthane catalyzed urethane over PPG enamel primer after I glassed up the holes I put in the hull by flipping my trailer over.

I did this (13 years ago) in a plastic tent I erected in my driveway, with fans and common furnace filters duct taped into it.

My convertible (the one in my avitar) was painted in my garage. That was done before the garage was finished insude, only the walls had sheetrock on them. I stapled plastic to the rafters, used box fans to remove fumesd, wet the floor, and got a super job, That was done in BC/CC in 2001, and just has normal road rash but still loks good

We don't have a booth, so everything gets painted in the driveway in front of our shop. We have to wait for all our neighbors to leave for the day, which sometimes leaves us spraying after dark.

Great guys, love this thread. :)
As far as the respiratory protection goes, I have picked up a Hobby Air unit that has a small turbie to provide clean breathing air.
It will be important as I plan to spray catalyzed single stage urethane. Isocyanates are nothing to mess with.
I'm going to be building my own HVLP turbine system, I have the 3 stage turbine for it now.

    Keep it going guys
    Thanks.

some states and areas are very strict. I remember when I was in California back in the early 90s a body shop got fined $5000 for having a can of paint open over the 2 minute limit. You also couldn't wash your brushes out in your yard that you used to apply latex interior paint.....and don't get caught throwing the empty latex paint can in the dumpster. Also witnessed an EPA guy ticket a small business owner $25000 for one of his company vans dumping all it's coolant on the ground. He had to file bankruptcy and closed his business.

First thing I ever spray painted was my '49 Hawthorn framed 26" balloon tire chopper bicycle.
I 'purloined' a DDT hand sprayer (like a bike air pump with a lower can) and thinned down some Fiesta Orange enamel.
Hung the frame and the fenders from the garage rafters and proceeded to give my right arm a workout whilst being careful to cover surfaces with long, brushlike strokes...and avoid runs!
It was worth it...but the downside was all the work I got from it. Everybody wanted their bike painted.
Got me started in the repair business. (and the unpleasantries of collecting the 'fare' after the services!)

Pinball, he explained that ALL spray painting MUST be done in a spray booth. This guy meant business, he looked like the typical "smokey and the bandit cop", mirrored sunglasses, cowboy hat and downright nasty. The last thing I wanted to do is piss him off. You have to remember that I live on Long Island where you need a permit to wipe your butt.

I'm happy to see this thread being well received.
It's nice to see all of the people who realize that painting this way is possible and good to see your pictures and results.
Pretty handy for me when I plan to do my own RPU and haven't painted much beyond rattle cans in the past. :)
