Technical TECH WEEK: How I made a model A hood top and stretched the sides

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by HarborKustomSpeedShop, Oct 12, 2015.

  1. Here is my tech week entry on how I made a 2 piece model A hood top and stretched the hood sides. I needed to lengthen the hood 5" to get the grille shell out in front of the axle like on the Rolling Bones cars and Doane Spencer roadster. I used two hoods for the lower side hinges and belt line.

I started with the hood sides first, I cut the first louver off the rear hood portion and then cut after the sixth louver on the new front section of the hood sides to get the needed extra length needed. Tack and then weld together. Grind, hammer and dollie flat.

For the center hinge, I got some 1/2" tubing and drilled it out to just over 3/8" ID. Then I cut the necessary amount of hinges needed, I needed 11 at 3" and 2 at 1/2".

Next I cut just above the belt line on the two hoods and remove the needed pieces. Then I slip rolled and cut the hood tops from sheet metal. Cut extra off to fit up to the center hinge and tacked to the corresponding hinges. then I marked and cut extra off the bottom, cleeco'd together and checked for proper operation, (repeat for both half's)

Once I was happy with the operation I tacked and welded just above the belt line, hammer and dollied to a metal finish.

For my application I had to take a pie shaped piece out of the bottom of the hood side to match the grille shell.

I wanted louvers in the hood top but I wanted something different, so I came up with a set of 5 staggered louver that I cut and shortened from the spare hood side.

Next I marked out and cut the large hole in the new top for the louvers. Tacked and fully welded them in place, hammer and dollied flat to a metal finish. At this stage is were I also fully welded the center hinge, be careful as I had to re drill the tubing as it shrunk during welding, then metal finished center hinge.

Once all done, this is what I had.

I'd vote for you, and I have my own Tech Week thread!

I wonder if Chip ever made louvers that way?

Like that you added louvers on the hood sides! Most just add flat sheet metal....

Perfect Proportions. I hope to build a stretched Hood similar to your idea too (someday).
