Marvin, is that top ridge that spirals around woven in or a separate piece wrapped over top that should stay put with the urethane over it? Looks good!

The ridge comes from about 750 or so half-hitches (coxcombing) with small turks heads covering the ends. It's for my MGTD with a 60hp flathead. Marvin,ct

    I did this last winter...

...I used Seintwine, a tar-impregnated nylon twine that you can get at any good marine supply place. I just re-tar it with pine-tar every so often and it stays nice, strong, and grippy. And as an extra bonus, it makes the Model A smell like a pine forest. I got the idea while working on a few boats a couple years back.

Ok cool the single French pattern- all the half hitches is the design I also wanted to use if my cord were smaller diameter. Any tricks to doing it that you can pass on? Pulling nearly 50 foot of string threw every hitch and twist got really tedious is there a quicker way?

I just wrapped the original wheel in my truck with marking twine and painted it black. Took care of all the cracks and imperfections.
    Sure took a while though.

Just finished wrapping mine today. Tied the ends behind and then used a paint brush and thinned glue to saturate the tied ends so it wont come untied, and I wouldn't have to make a big knot to finish.

This thread inspired me to do a couple of my wheels.

I used coton packing twine. Then I made a mixture of Elmers glue thinned with water and colored it with acrylic paint. Brushed the mixture on the twine and let it dry.

The yokes in my junk 1942 Lockheed Lodestar were string wrapped. They didn't come that way from the factory. Someone had wrapped white tape over the top of the string. I peeled all of the tape off.

This is the original wheel from my '40 pickup. I had hung it on the fence in the garden never intending to use it but when the time came to need a wheel I decided to go with it. "Path of least resistance". I epoxied up all the cracks and checks and removed the center with a hole saw and installed the center spline cut out from the original steering wheel that came with the GM column and welded it in place. I used some Krylon black spray paint, a Wheel Skins cover and some Hemp cord I picked up at Michaels. To keep the hemp cord tight on the cross bars as soon as it was installed I coated it with white glue. So far so good! The column is from a Gm Van that I re-sleeved with steel exhaust pipe and polished and clear coated and the tilt and turn signal levers are from an old Gibson SG.

Good ideas. I'm going to do one soon. Have an old wheel to practice on.

Just practicing with some rope and an old go cart wheel. And it does take some practice around the spokes. Well at least it's, uh, festive. :)

It feels like role reversal, I'm sitting in my easy chair knitting this and the wife is watching football.

  19. ^^^ Blowby,
Your wheel got me thinking, could you use paracord? Would it be too course?
    Lots of color possibilities.

Well there is something to be said for thicker stuff, less wrapping! My wheel is 13" diameter, had a padded suede cover that was toast. The rim underneath was about an inch diameter. The rope is 1/4". It feels good to me, not too thick.

  21. Paracord works well, just finished this one today. After I had it all wrapped, I gave it 2 soaking wet coats of water based polyurethane mixed 50/50 with water, and a third coat unthinned. This is an 18" wheel, took 250 feet of 3/16 cord, including 30 feet in each of the turks heads.

  22. Put your string in a bag and pass the bag back and forth as you work. When I did mine, I had 3 65 foot cords each in a bag. I worked with a maximum of 6 ft out of the bag, when that got used, I would take the cord out of the bag and straighten out the twists, stuff it back in the bag and continue. This is a tutorial that I used. http://www.morethanknots.com/Hitchin.../RBhitch1.html
