Folks Of Interest Street Is Neater In A Beater. Let's See Yours.

  1. Yeah I have followed Gray's exploits through the years and I always enjoyed his take on hot rodding. I agree that the fun is in driving them and I try to practice what I preach, and even though my old lacquer paint job is failing, I still like to polish it! After all, its lacquer, if you polish it, it will shine! :)

My '62 Toad wagon just barely squeaks in here, but she's my daily. The rear seats are replaced with a plywood deck & carpet, making a nicely effective "pick-up' bed (with a built-in camper shell :D), and I added a chassis mounted hitch mount of my own design. She runs, hauls, tows, pulls stumps, and still gets looks daily. Conversion from tailgate to S.D. style rear door, and paneled back windows when I get that particular 'round tuit (all the while running daily of course).

You cannot polish a turd, but you CAN roll it in glitter!

We have a little local show called the Jalopy Jam where we invite and encourage beaters. Here's some pics from last year's event:

There sure is alot of high dollar Beaters on here. To me in appearance I see some beaters but some classified ads prove that otherwise.

To me a beater is a work in progress, and low budget. I guess we all have different budgets to work with. I can't see paying 20-30k + for a beater.

Drove the truck for 19 years and the coupe for 8 years now.
All I ever owned, worked on and drove.
Never been to a car show.
My dogs and I like em and that's all that really matters.

Before I got it, I never would've guessed how many folks like these old cars and the stories they have to tell.
Since driving my truck, I wished I would see more old rides on the roads.

So I guess, a 'Beater' is now the new 'daily driver' ?

Just last week a chevy collector told me about his newest 57 truck and how he won't completely restore it, calling it his 'rat rod' .... :D
He hasn't seen my truck, but his 57 sounded in better shape.

I keep wanting to do this, but maybe this fall, I will spray a new coat of paint over the old one after a little sanding.
A school kid did a rattle can paint job just before I got it in 1995.
About time to get busy.

  20. I called my "Traditional Hotrod" a "Beater" but John Q Public calls anything old a "R^Rod"!

    Go figure...

It was soooo cool to see your coupe all over L.A.R.S. last month! I kept hoping to run into you at different points, but never managed to.

There does seem to be some pretty large corruption of terms going on these days... Even from within our own ranks. Not sure there is an answer though. I just know that I'm getting a bit testy when people roll up on the 'Bucket and yell "Nice rat rod!" like it's compliment. Lucky I'm a pretty good natured soul most of the time!

As far as the money question I keep seeing the undertones of, I have yet to see anything on these pages that I wouldn't drive the wheels off of then reattach and drive some more when they DID fall off.

  24. Thanks. There was a lot going on all over town. Lynn Pew (pewsplace on the HAMB) parked right next to me in his 40 delivery at the Fairplex and I never got to meet him either!

Nah, I'm normal, and the car is normal. 'Course, that is open to philosophical discussion to some extent, but dimensionally I'm 6'1" and about 185 or so. What makes that picture look a bit freaky-deeky is the 16" Halibrands and 8.90 dirts on the back. I've since switched off to a pair of Towel City cheater slicks and the car looks many time longer and more to proportion. I'm not going to post another pict to cloud up Missy's Dad's thread, but it looked almost toy like with both the rear Halibrands on and the front no holes and dirt ribs...
