I thought you were drinking shrimp cocktail!
    Car is coming along nicely!
I ramped up the heat and painted the inside of mine today- there's going to be a bunch of new iron on the street SOON!!

It's a cocktail minus the seafood.
Awesome ! You must have had the heat ripping today ! Damn cold out.
I sure hope I can get things together this summer. That would be pretty cool ! I'd love to have my car along the wall in the flathead row of the gathering.

I really like how you did your rear radius rods. Very sturdy and look great!

I bought a 49 Ford Shoebox Dash from Dino64 from the H.A.M.B. Classifieds about a month ago. Soon as I saw it, I knew I had to have it .. love the shape of it and the way it's laid out. It also fits the era car in attempting to build. [IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG]
It's been in Jersey at my sisters house (shipped there to save on costs.)
I picked it up last week when I was there.

    Today was CHOP CHOP time....

With 4 major sections of the dash left and in need of a few fillers at the A pillars and where the radio and ashtray would've been.

I think it's going to look killer.

This is where I stopped for the night. Needs some fillers at the A pillars and a flange across the front to mount it to the cowl. I was able to retain the original mounts on the lower portion of the dash and they tuck in perfectly. I just need to fabricate some mounting tabs on the cowl so I can use them.
Wasn't sure which way to go with the ash tray and radio section of the dash.
    [IMG][IMG]
The lower dash dropped down to allow for them but I wasn't sure I wanted to keep that look. The reason being was it was offset from the clock and looked unbalanced.
I ended up deleting it and using the metal from the deleted portion of the dash where I moved the glovebox to. Took some time because there's a lot going on there ...[IMG]
I tried so hard to make sure I had equal measurements from the points of the ends of the dash detail. All the while making sure the clock remained centered.
It took all afternoon but I'm really happy with my finished product so far.
[IMG] this is the first time I've ever tackled any type of sheet metal work
    9hrs later.

Time well spent. It's the details like this that will make it YOUR car. I don't think I've seen a dash like that before in a hot rod ( which doesn't mean too much!), but I think it looks PISSAH!
If you haven't already, don't forget to beef it up for your column drop, and for added strength in general.
    Lookin' good, Pardner.

    Thanks Mike !

There is a support that runs the inside length of the dash on the underside of it. I was planning on running a piece of flat stock inside it (it's a shallow channel) to add some integrity back to it. The mounts for the column drop are still there also so hopefully I can retain those as well.
    I'm super pumped about it.

Spent some time filling in the ends of the dash yesterday.
I don't have any fancy tools. Just a few hammers and a piece of railroad track.
    They get the job done...
Got the drivers side "done" and kinda ran out of pieces left from sectioning the dash. So I'm saving the passenger side for another day.

Worked on the mount for the handbrake after that. I looked around and figured mounting off the transmission would be the best way to go.
This is what I came up with.

Got a few hours in the Garage this afternoon filling the passenger side of the dash.
Much happier with the way this side came out.

I am putting everything except the ign key in the glove box. made a metal glove box to mount the gm fuse panel, light switch and charger port.

    Wow !
That looks amazing, you did an incredible job with that.
I sure hope my finished product looks half as nice.

I had planned to make a glove box inside like you have done.
I'm going to fill one hole under the clock that was for the left radio control. Beside that I plan on running the controls in the stock locations if possible.

After purchasing the dash I did a search and only found s few pictures online. Both people had deleted the clocks and altered the look entirely.
I wanted to retain as much of the character of the stock dash as I could.

    Thank you for sharing !

  28. Mike thanks for the compliment. Never did one before, was a little bit of a challenge. Now I am thinking of finding a small tach to insert in the clock opening. I should have cut the bottom off mine for a smoother look. Like yours, the way it flows.

dig it, looks factory, keep those how-to's coming "buck n' a half"...
    .... vtw... great finished dash...
    i bought a crashed $25.00 '50 dash...driver's side crushed...
but i trimmed mine so the speedo ended up too close to the w/s... dash kinda points upward more than i liked...
now hanging on a nail in the garage...
... FREE as a PICK UP ONLY if you can use it...

I think what you have there is "Garage art"
I'd put a clock in the speedo hole and call it a day.

I don't have clue where my final seat position will be so I'm hoping I didn't remove more than necessary from the leading edge of my dash.
I feel confident it will be okay
    Fingers crossed
