Got all the panels aligned and Cleeko'd...Enlarge the holes for bolts later....could have welded the panels together but it's got to be able to take 'em apart later.
    pp1.jpg

Tacked the spring hangers better...cut the bolts off..was hitting the steering arms.
Adjusted the tie rod holes in the bones (The longer the steering arms the more they move up and down when steering.) ~ 1/2 inch
Loosen the steering arm, to be able to get the tie rod end off, unscrew one tie rod end, pull out tie rod, grind off material...Reverse procedure to see if the tie rod touches the bone...REPEAT ABOUT 10-15 times.

Made sleeves to TIG weld in later...
    pp2.jpg
    R - fitting..Not cut yet!
    pp3.jpg
L - Cut to length...Now I just have to find the holes i cut in the bones to cover the back.

    lens.jpg

Thin Wall Chrome Molly in the small holes...That's what my "Neighbor" had in stock...!..wasn't as bad to weld as I thought.
    b2.jpg
The BRUTE...to save on those expensive flopper wheels b3.jpg
Paint? Just to keep it from rusting.
    b4.jpg
Looks thin on top...? It's Solid!...& There's hardly any weight on it...
    Look at a hairpin setup.
(May or may not weld on a peace on top...we'll see?)

Back to working on the steering.

The Wood Buck was good to pound on...but the wrong shape..same as the out side of the support.
    ds1.JPG
Bent the center / No way I could bend it that much so I split it and I'll TIG it together with the down tubes.

Soon .. Mount the steering box ... after figuring out how long the new cowl pitman arm should be.
(want it to be parallel with the bones (Not optimal but looks good!))

Looking good, Tommy. You're making good progress. I'm going to go ahead and encourage you to brace up those front bones. I worry about the braking force multiplied by the leverage of the dropped axle. I really like what you did there , though....going through instead of under. That car is going to be bad-ass.

That's going to work out well. Can't you just walk down the street and ask the guy that tossed it out what it came from?

Cut up the "bad steering box tom use as support bearing.

The adjuster plate with a bearing might work too?

How I want it to look...parallel....
    20150413_185811.jpg 20150413_185725.jpg
End Bearing needs some more trimming at the end..
want it to poke through the side cowl..(It has the seal at the end
    20150413_201611.jpg
Shaft will be cut down in the lathe to fit the sleeve and welded in...leaving the end for the needle bearing..

This is what happens when you assume things...I assumed the Dodge Brothers made the bolt holes parallel with the output shaft...
    20150414_164047.jpg
    20150414_165904.jpg
After s'more meassuring...there's not enough room for the end bearing..
    So this will be it
    20150414_223155.jpg
(I won't have a 2 inch pipe sticking through the cowl side.)
The Mopar Pitman Arm nut is slightly larger than 1-1/4"...
Took the nut to Sears (They sell loose sockets) and they didn't have one that fits...!
For some reason I have three of these. They're all labeled 1-1/4"...
But only one of them fits...?...1-3/8...? have to be?

Steering boxes are often a pain. Corvair box is the same, nothing parallel or square mounting surface wise. I spliced two f150 style boxes for center steering and learned plenty the hard way. The surface area on your flange will stop it from moving , will be more leveragè on the box though.

Steering Bracket with sleeves welded in and support added.

    20150415_205518 (Small).jpg
Trying to fit everything...It's an average between -
"Steering box higher up" and "Reasonably long Pitman Arm"
    20150415_213836 (Small).jpg
    I was shooting for a 7 inch (3.7 turns) pitman arm...s'gonna be closer to 8.6" (3 turns)...
    20150415_220808 (Small).jpg 20150415_205518 (Small).jpg
Some guys here on the HAMB are running 10 inch ones that work good...
    20150415_214220 (Small).jpg
Flipped Steering arm to easier get tie rod parallel with bones.
    20150415_212453 (Small).jpg 20150415_212947 (Small).jpg
Cross beam is where my transmission wants to live.. 20150415_214019 (Small).jpg
Plan to weld in on the upper one and cut the lower out after it's leveled and supported.
Moves the beam towards the firewall and up on the passenger side.
    20150415_215931 (Small).jpg
Or I might cut it off and run a support up to my cowl hoop with a cross beam higher up..?
    We'll see tonight

Got everything in on Friday (no work this weekend!)
Everything cam together with more foot / pedal space.
    20150417_115904.jpg 20150417_130525.jpg
Will add one more support up to the main hoop on the drivers side.
    20150417_153158.jpg 20150417_153229.jpg 20150417_153904.jpg 20150418_153517.jpg 20150418_153721.jpg
The Pitman arm ended up at 7 inches which gives it the same steering ratio as stock Mopar.
(Found it at 4 A-bodys website)

Hots rods in paradise, goes together like spam and pineapple huh!
I don't know if you have ever been a machinist or not, but your work looks good to me, I was one for 30 years and we had guys that couldn't begin to do what you are doing.
That steering gear and hub work looks very nice.
Pretty creative use of that boring head too, curious why you didn't use the cross slide.
    Keep after it.
