**** Updated 7/3 **** Two Bonneville newbies are checking off another bucket list item - a run to Bonneville in my roadster. I have a fellow HAMBer/Fordbarner Chuck Lessard riding shotgun and we're going out with the Rolling Bones and coming back on our own, taking our time, making stops to museums and points of interest along the way. We would like to meet up with as many HAMB and 'Barner folks as possible on this trip. To that end, here is the itinerary from the Bones with more specific info when we get it - we hope anyone in the vicinity of these stops can stop by and say hey: Aug 2nd - Wheeling, WV - this is our first stop on our way to catch up with the tour the next day. Aug 3rd - Econo lodge , 10667 Fremont pike , Perrysburg , OH. 43551 - 419-874-8771 - close to Toledo, OH Aug 4th - Altoona, IA Aug 5th - North Platte, NE Aug 6th - Rock Springs, WY Aug 7th - Orem, UT Aug 8-15th - Wendover, UT - Peppermill Casino, across from the Golden Nugget Aug 16-17 - making tracks to Joplin, MO for the HAMB Drags, staying @ the Holiday Inn Host Hotel Plans are to make stops in more-or-less this order from Joplin: Starbird Museum Pete and Jakes? Speedway Museum Parts of Rt 66 Speedway, IN to hope fully stop by Bubba's shop and say hey When we know more specific stop info I'll post it right here. We'll alternate driving after each gas stop so there will be pictures and video from both of us. I intend to take my netbook to post as much/all of the info we gather each day. I will post some here, but the majority of my posting will be done on the Fordbarn: http://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showthread.php?p=676112&posted=1#post676112 We are totally psyched about going and can't wait to get started ....
I'll see you guys on your way through Nebraska. Sounds like you have a great trip planned! Have you thought about running down to Joplin, MO, for the HAMB Drags on August 17th? Malcolm
You guys will be a tad South of me but we will see you on the salt since Keith Cornell is a fellow Yblock guy.
Malcolm, Man, this is a hellofanidea - that's alot of hard running from Wendover - about 1370 miles in what would be 2 - 2.5 days. We didn't want to "rush" back but that is in the heart of where Starbird, and Speedway are ..... Thanks for the heads up .... Chuck and I will discuss it and let everyone know ....
Ok - Chuck and I will be at the Joplin HAMB Drags - we should get there some time early Friday evening, in time to check out the rides and have some fun. It will be a great way to meet up with so many fellow HAMBers. Thanks for the idea, Malcolm!
Up to Rt 81 - we'll be coming through Harrisonburg sometime on Friday as we go half-way to our first hookup with the Bones in Perrysburg, OH (near Toledo and north of you) so using 64 is not really in the cards ... Probably stop somewhere near Wheeling or Martinsburg that Friday night and cruise on up to Perrysburg the next day, Sat .... we haven't come up with a definite plan yet. What cha have in mind?
TomT, I use to live in Williamsburg, I moved to Akron to work at Goodyear. My old man and I are also going to be first-timers on the salt this year. Safe travels and maybe we'll see you on the salt.
Hey, it's getting to the point of needing some really cool HAMB/Fordbarner name tags - similar to the alliance tags perhaps? Without the tags we'd probably pass one another and not know who the hell is who!
I'll try and catch you in Altoona, if not there I'll be in Joplin for sure . Have a safe drive and pack plenty of rain-x , we get some hellish storms out here on the plains
My original thoughts were that if you were passing thru the 'Burg about lunch time maybe we could meet up somewhere for lunch. But somehow work has managed to get in the way and I don't think it will work for me. Normally I'm off on Fridays.
I'll be heading across from Western Australia with a photographer from Street Machine magazine. Would love to catch up and meet the Rolling Bones guys, and yes Tman... you too. We're staying at the Peppermill too, TomT, so we're bound to bump into each other at some stage.
HRP - I missed it this year as the roadster was down and family obs. It is definitely ont he calendar for next year ....
On Sat I took a 1-day bonsai run in the roadster to the Heavy Rebel show in Winston Salem, NC - 250 miles each way. A tune up for B-ville as the car was loaded with just about everything save for luggage for the trip. The car ran great, no problems what-so-ever. I just need to grease the rear wheel bearings and adjust the brakes and I'm ready to go. The car had so much weight in it that it rode like a caddy - much better than it usually does. It's going to be one long smooth ride!
If you were taking I-70 instead of I-80, I reccomend a few sights to see through the Rockies. And I'd invite you to stop by my place. Now that the cobwebs and mud dobbers have been knocked out of my Bonneville tire truck, It might be time for it to head back to its Utah home.
