The Armistice Day Blizzard Ranks #2 on the Minnesota State Climatology Office Top five weather events of the 20th century. Ask any Minnesotan born before 1940 and they can tell you where they were during the Armistice Day Blizzard. The weather was relatively benign the morning of the November 11, 1940. Many people were outdoors, taking advantage of the mild holiday weather. The weather forecast that morning was for colder temperatures and a few flurries. Few people were prepared for what was to come. The storm started with rain, however the rain quickly turned to snow. By the time the blizzard tapered off on the 12th, the Twin Cities had received 16.7 inches of snow, Collegeville 26.6 inches, and 20-foot drifts were reported near Willmar. In all 49 Minnesotans lost their lives in this storm, many of them hunters trapped by the sudden turn of events. One big problem with the storm was there was no place to push the snow.

She is digging out a 1933 or 1934 Chevrolet Standard 3 window coupe with a rumble seat. I used to live in the Columbia River Gorge in Oregon and had a 1968 Camaro buried like that when it was new. I don't remember very many people getting frozen to death so Minnesota's storm was worse. I am happy I don't live in the Gorge any more.

Looks like possible wheel bearing or hub trouble with their Overland......

Wow! Great pic! I believe, due to what
*appears* to be an Ontario license plate
on the front of the car, the "On our way
    to Hamilton
" caption on this pic refers to
Hamilton Ontario, my old home town!
I wonder if this hapless family eventually
made it to their destination on this trip??

  15. Does that plate say 1918? If so, the car is not more than a couple of years old.

They are called "Motor Wheels." Guys have been playing w/this idea since the bicycle was being invented. Going is not a problem… just stopping…

Here is an interesting 1918 photo from the Surrey Vintage Vehicle
Society showing three ca. '17 Willys-Overland cars in Platre, Cyprus!
Andy Bolam, a Briton, emigrated to Cyprus where he turned up this
pic and sent it to the S.V.V.S.
