Essex won the Pikes Peak race with a four banger and set cross country records.

Very well done! Look at all the character lines and reveals in this Roadster. Especially considering what you had to start with. Id be very interested in a few pics on how you did the subrails and substructure as Im assuming you started with wood inside.

I wonder if these two have any connection.

I wouldn't think they are the same car if that's what your asking. One is a single and the other is a 2 seater. Whole Lotta work to switch the 2. Rear of the body is pretty diff as well. However, they may have been built by the same dude....

Another Chevy, AMBR. A 35 phaeton like mine and not pre35. Some like it and well built but those wheels don't do the car justice IMHO. I prefer Darryl's black phaeton from earlier post. AMBR.JPG

Anyone have a shot of a late 20's/30's Mopar frame set up in either hot rod or speedster/modified style?

  14. My '25 Chev roadster and a '24 roadster rear I fabricated, got to get the Chevy numbers up somehow.

I get the same feeling when I see your build Jimmy B. This is 1948-1951, as it must have looked! The restored S&G roadster is beautiful little car, but the pebble beach winner is to me more a replica , because it dosent have the race car feel that your car has in spades!
Yours look like a well used 1926:roadster body looked in the late fortys.

I want my build too look like the Chuck Spurgin roadster, at least from the front. I like three springer. All though mine will be a 4 spinner, run a six er and most likely be a boattail.

Because I think the first interpretation is SO cool, but your is the second best thing!!! I love it.

    Bowtie leads the way!!

It is funny how much time and money people will will spend on wood that is on the outside of a car and how quickly they disparage wood on the inside.

  23. yeah, and all the while sitting in their recliner [framed in wood] sitting on the floor [wood] on joists [wood] surrounded by framing [wood] that is all protected by rafters [wood] sheathed in [you guessed it, wood] and the power comes in to the building held by wood poles etc........ask the wife if she likes wood?

  24. Not only that, but the wood they used in these cars is HARD! I had to cut a hole in the floor of the '35 when I converted it to a floor shift. Hope I never have to do that again. An angry beaver would have chipped a tooth on it.

In the end it worked out well for hot rodders that Henry chose to attach the body panels with stamped steel but to begin with the reason for the choice was not about quality or longevity it was about cost. The toughest part of building an old Chevy is finding enough pieces in one place. A good thing is that in the winter we can watch TV while we whittle brand new parts.

I can't talk too much sheet...remember I'm building a 20' Buick roadster. There is absolutely NO wood left in the car. I will have to build an entire inner structure out of tubing.....
