3 of them (Autounion) easing round a small track for show. Still sound great pulling away!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=myxMudtFX6g
I saw a documentary on Bernd Rosemeyer and Auto Union on The History Chanel or Discovery maybe, a number of years ago, and the spin they put on his fatal crash was that the tire technology of the time was not up to the speeds the were reaching, and that it was a tire failure that caused the crash, after just reading the report that was clearly not the case: http://www.kolumbus.fi/leif.snellman/rose.htm http://www.kolumbus.fi/leif.snellman/zana.htm "(tyres were nearly intact on the wreck)" Dan
Those Auto Unions were the ones to beat in the late Thirties. Not only were they inspirations for streamliners (though there were a few rear engined slippery cars before this one) It also inspired at least one custom, I was in Loveland and took a pic of this car that Dave Crouse is working on for one of his customers. It is a custom that was patterned off not this Auto-Union but the other in the thread, I guess sometime in the 50's. A bit odd for my tastes but still a cool ride.
Looks like there is some mystery about the origin of the car... and it failed to sale. http://www.cnn.com/2007/AUTOS/03/10/auto_union_dtype_no_sale/index.html?eref=rss_topstories - Joe
