    November '77, I had just started 10th grade. I remember this issue's cover and in those days the van craze had badly infected Hot Rod for several years. When covers like this one started happening I knew all would be well in the world now that the van craze was dying down. Street Freaks! I used to cut class (a lot) and go to the school library and check out Hot Rod magazines.

    Man, this is a cool thread. Love them gassers! Here's one that used to belong to a guy in our club (Norm) and I think now belongs to 'Spanky' of the Hooligans in Killeen, TX.

  10. Here back in the day at the Old Mohawk Drag Strip in its final days as use as a drag strip is Stu Denyes driving the slant 6 powered altered. On the side is Power Tune UP. That was my company. The car was originaly mine but I never finished it. Stu did. It is the same car and the same guy I partnered with for the slant 6 turbo deal (pic below) but this is after it was painted and Stu had returned the turbo deal to me and asked for a 225 Slant Six on natural air. Motor is a 225 +.060". Pistons were TRW FORGED replacement which they used to make. Block and head had over .070 removed (from each) Modified 360 SB Mopar velves were reworked and installed . Head was ported. Intake was an Offy 4 BBl with a 600 cfm Holley single pump vacuum secondary. Cam was an isky 550 legeurra grind. (Engine is still around somewhere in Trenton, Ontario and is still good. )Trans was a 64 valiant auto with PUSHBUTTON shifter. Diff and front axle were salvaged from the Belleville Road angels old driveshaft dragster. Front end was Thames (anglia van) and rear was a narrowed 8 3/4 with 4.56s Car ran mostly 12.05 12.03s and occasionally would run an 11.90 something. This car won an awful lot of money in its day, $100 at a time. Stu despite his coke bottle glasses he wore back then, was almost unbeatable on the lights. Attn Rick Proctor.ONDR. This is Chris' car in its heyday before it was modernized.
    Don
    PS Stu's first cousin is Phil Denyes who oversaw the vistors centre build and development of the Daytona facilty that greets your eye when you go to the Daytona track. .

  20. Don;
    Unfortunately Chris smacked the wall at Cayuga with the car ,and has built yet another bantam roadster..
    I don't know how much of the chassis was replaced ,but the body suffered a lot of damage.

    This is what happens when you save too many parts, sooner or later you throw then together and this is what you get.

    I got to say I'm reallly enjoying this thread. It's definitely giving me alot of ideas. Here just a couple of oddballs I shot the NHRR last year. The TOPO is all steal and he drives it all the time. Gets 30 mpg with a Pinto drive train. That and the Volvo gasser is something you don't see every day.
