My Studebakers are offended to learn their engines are considered "oddball"! They had become accustomed to thinking of themselves as "small displacement Cadillacs". :D

 In the context of a Traditonal Forum, a Buick Straight Eight is NOT an 'Oddball'!

Not as numerous as the ubiquitous Flathead Ford, but by no means rare in hot tod applications. California Bill Fisher even wrote a book highlighting popular performance tweaks.

I am beginning to see a pattern here.......I have 3 Studebaker V8's and 4 Buick Straight Eights......hmmmm......Oddball or Man of a Discerning Tastes? :D

All common. How about a 32 Plymouth 4 cylinder. Flathead twin plug or OHV with Y block head. How many of those have you see DSCN8057.JPG n?

These two don't meet the "hot rod" engine category yet but they meet the oddball requirement. The four cylinder F head is form a 1919 Essex and will power an early speedster using as many Essex parts as I can find. The other one is a 413 inch Dodge truck engine. I had planned to put it in a Bonneville lakster but it is too big for the vintage engine class and B gas lakester record is so high I could not even afford the tires to run there. I know where there is another one maybe a twin engine dragster.

The engine in question is sort of an oddball. But the type of engine itself is not really that odd other then the fact that a 394 doesn't get used much in our circles. Could be that they are somewhat rare or could be that they are somewhat uncomely never the less you don't see too many hot rods with the big olds bolted between the rails. ;)

Most people aren't aware of MEL (Mercury, Edsel, Lincoln) variety of Ford big blocks that came in 383, 410, 430, and 462 inch displacements. But they have made their way into a few hot rods (and even more customs) through out the years.

  20. Allison made its way into a few dragsters. If I had one I would be all about r trying to make it run and drive on the street. Although I a not sure where I would find a gas station. LOL
