  11. I can't help loving the almost cartoon style of 'novelty' (Show) rods,
They were what we went to the big custom shows to see,
Certainly if I think about names like Roth, Starbird, Casper etc
they all built stuff which would be classed as 'Show',
    Pure art,
But never the less captured the imagination of many of us, for me these guys turned out the stuff that made me want to build customs.

Keep the pictures coming, great thread.

Here's a slightly OT thing I built about 10 years ago, inspired by the 70's show cars. It was called the "Trike-U-La". I grew up going to car shows in that era and even with the silliness of the fad, I still get nostalgic looking at these cars. The Trike-U-La was never finished before I sold it, but had a 1600cc VW engine, casket shaped shift box, bone shift linkage, bone 'landau' bars and real casket hardware surrounding the back window. It also had tarantula wheel centers on the rear and a the headlight was held by the open mouth of a skull. I know it was goofy, but that was kind of the point. I wanted my own little version of what the Munsters may have had, if they ever had a trike. It was a blast, but the damned front wheel wouldn't stay on the ground!

I know I'll get flamed for this thing, but it was more fun than a bathtub full of boobies!

Probably not quite what this thread started off with, but I do recall seeing down in Phoenix a C cab style pickup running a single front Harley wheel and forks and had a operational tipper on back.
The driver sat in the center of the cab and steering was via a couple of rods to the forks and a set of handle bars inside the cab. Sorry I dont have any pic's maybe somebody from AZ will post a pic.

The Pink Panther car from the cartoon show. It was used in the opening credits for a season or two.

The Hannibal 8. Driven by Professor Fate and Max in the 1965 film, "The Great Race". On of my favorite car movies.

The Leslie Special. Also from The Great Race.

Oh. The other reason I liked that movie. .:D Natalie Wood. Class act, that one was.

  21. Rod & Custom did a write up on the cars from the great race when the movie came out. It was cool the way the studio made those cars.
    Thanks, Mike

I've been looking around, but can't find any pics of cars by Ray Fahrner. He was a pretty big deal around the midwest. He had the jag powered X-Ray, a car with coins all over it, an old stagecoach thingamajig and a ton of others. I'll keep digging for pics.
