I was looking at a real old set of hot rod magazines and it occured to me that nobody seems to build these novelty or theme style hot rods like in the old days.

I remember the RED BARON T bucket and the POP CORN WAGON and of course there was the UNCERTAIN T I guess you may call it a coupe!!!

Anybody feel like post some pic's and we can create a historical record of the big names.

Then there was the MUNSTERS who had 2 hot rods and of course Barris must have built at least one in his time?

Do folks still build these or is it a thing of the past???

Yes, they are a thing of the past along with that red head! That is one of the better "theme rods" though!

Anybody who can sand cast his own Caddy flathead parts (successfully) like you could surely build a T like that. Why don't you do it Russ?

  5. I'd characterize this as a novelty car:

Aren't all of those 'ratrods' novelty cars?
They are definitely a passing fad

What about pic's of the early stuff, I remember as a kid being fascinated by those kind of cars and they were far from ratrods they had absolutely finished and chromed.
They were extreme with a theme.

The Red Baron was one of my favorites. That yellow thing is just awful.

    mine too,
    when I was about ten,
it was right up there with the batmobile and the monkey mobile

didn't I just see The Red Baron in a magazine or book just recently?

George Barris & Elden Titus teamed up to build the Vibrasonic Roadster. I think it qualifes for this thread. Elden Titus recently passed away. He was an incredible craftsman.

Yeah, there was also some kind of roadster I was searching for in old mag's that had the flathead engine in the rear and it was front wheel drive using an original style ford diff fitted with universal knuckles etc, probably did not work all that well but it was out there for being different and ahead of its time.
If somebody does not start posting pic's I am going to resort tp scanning old magzine photo's.

How 'Bout the Boot Hill Express. It was a real car that became a model kit.
