  6. heres three of mine, one of a friend's . Sr Dragster (for old people) and Gettin Vicious named by a fellow racer. The Midnight Mirada is so named because as a long haul trucker he often got to his shop late a night and worked on it all night at the end of a run, The Jeep altered with the 5.7Hemi is already the HEEP which will stay .

The one car that I really remember from when my dad took me to Lion's drag strip at around age 8 was a green Henry J named "International Super Pickle".......I wish I could find some pictures of that car. I tried Googling those words, but got too many hits. Awesome name, and it had a picture of big mean green pickle with slicks, doing a burnout on the side of the car.....if I remember correctly.

Being of Scot heritage I ran under the name "The Highlander". The seat had imported wool in the clan tartan pattern and the back of the spoiler said "UP YOUR...KILT!". Car was green with gold pearl. If I can from here I'll add pics to this response later.

  25. Another 5 STAR thread! What an interesting subject, but very relevent.

There is also the lament of the demise of "hand lettering" on racecars. Handlettering always had the "snap" or a certain look to it. Hard to describe, it usually carried the soul of it's renderer. In capable hands a good lettering job literally "made" the image of the car along with it's paint and ET's.

On another thread here on the HAMB about Funny Cars, I was interested in the fact that many of the ressurected Funny Cars are so poorly lettered. The paint scheme and lettering make the "show"! Computerized aided lettering although do-able in capable hands just doesn't have that "flow". It's too stiff and I won't get started on body wraps.

The thing is, many, many of the sign artists that lettered and captured our attention from the 60's, 70's and early 80's are still around. Older, wiser but, they still got the touch.

Back to the subject of names on racecars, here's my very first lettering job. Joe Nawrot's '56 Chevy "When you HOT, you HOT" leaving the lights at US 30 Dragstrip in July of 1971.

An old timer friend of mine told me that there was a 65 Merc Comet 4 door gasser that raced locally around the Dayton area in the late 60's. It was called Comet Mini Doors
