Projects My 1929 Model A Ford AV8 truck build thread

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by INLAW MODEL A, Dec 12, 2010.

  1. It is a 48-52 Ford F1 truck transmission crossmember.

  2. This is the best build I've seen since Rolf's coupe. Brilliant!

  4. Yes it is a good choice. The only thing better is a x member from a 32.

You can see it now installed on page 4, Ryan accidentally deleted my pictures. I just uploaded them to photobucket and attached them.

Great build with good pictures. cant wait too see this one finished. I really like how the frame turned out.

  6. Thanks! I can't wait to see the frame painted!:D

If it was above freezing I would paint the stuff outside.

I decided today to pressure wash the engine. It sucks when it is cold out but I figured I would try it. It was 15 degrees and I made a lot of steam. It came out pretty clean though. I need to do a little brake clean cleanup and it should be ready to reassemble. The pan was the worst part. It was full of sludge.

Another reason to pressure was was to clean out the block of rust. This is the second dust pan full of rust that I removed. I am sure there is still some in it. I ran water through it until it was clear.

  7. I couldn't resist bolting it together to see how it looks:

I also managed to spray some etch primer earlier in the week:

nice nice nice, I love all these home made thing you keep finding and that your using the parts from them. the radiator in the stationary power source looks like A 1932 v8 ford. if it is thats a real good score!

Nice build! I am in the process of building a 27 T Tudor in an A frame with a 53 flatty and open drive. My engine is in the same condition as yours and i would like to know how you cleaned the the engine with in the short block configuration? especially the pistons and valves.

P.S. Looks like you will have alot of fun when its done!!!!:D

  11. Thanks, I think it should be a fun little truck. To clean the engine I just used a grinder with a wire brush. When I was all done I used a hot water pressure washer with good soap. When the block gets hot enough, the grease releases. I also used a needle scaler for hard to reach areas on the block and in the passages.

  17. Thanks, They already have the bug. I was thinking semi-gloss maroon. It will not get painted probably until next winter. I hope to have it driving for June 2011. It will probably be call the r word until I can get paint on it.

I like your build, I'll be watching this thread!

  21. This weekend was not real productive for the truck. I did manage to get a oil pan that did not leak and get it cleaned up. I pressure washed the block and pan again and got it cleaner. I also fired up the sand blaster and cleaned up a few more parts. I found a pair of pumps that are better than what I had, plus I did not want to use the double pulley pump.
Then today I managed to install the pan and water pumps and put on a coat of primer. Maybe by the end of the week I can have the engine buttoned up.

A very nice build. Where did you get your inner driveshaft shortened? I'm in the middle of my Sport Coupe build and it's one of the only major jobs left.

    Thanks,

    Alex

  26. Thanks!
I had a local machine shop that also drive shafts do it. I could have done it myself, but I could not hold the coupling centered in the lathe. Any machine shop can do it for you.

    Great looking build!

  28. I did a little more priming and painting today. The red is still wet but I had to put on some goodies to see how it looks. :D I painted it red because I was told red is for racing.
