So I decided to put together a gallery of sorts showing a Model A coupe at various levels of chop. I couldn't find a similar resource on HAMB and thought it might help those trying to make a decision, with images in order of severity.

I tried to get shots that show cars at a similar angle, hope this helps...

4" hands down looks best proportion-wise to my old eyes.

Yea... I would be leaning towards the 3 to 4" chop as well. 8" is going to make it really hard to see traffic lights.

I like the 6" best, maybe 5".. A 4" chop is so common place anymore it almost looks like no chop.. I really like heavy chops but understand all the reasons against them.. I suppose you could always chop it 3or4", stand back and decide if you want to go more.. It really is a hard decision...

  6. big chops look cool but 4" is best to me. thanks for posting these up.

I think if you're going for 6 or more, you should probably be thinking about channeling as well. I think the deep chop starts making the body look a bit beefy on a hiboy. I don't dislike it personally, I just think that level of chop is best complimented by a shorter overall profile and perhaps a lower stance.

I think this is a great post BTW.

Great idea for a thread. I lean toward the heavier chops myself, but they all look good, just a matter of preference for most. Thanks for posting these up. I think it's the first time I've ever seen the different heights side by side. Cool stuff.

What is the stock window inside diameter height on an A, so some one can measure their chop?

For instance, if someone were told their chop was one height but it doesn't match up to the photos here.

Cool thread!! I just want to point out that some of the model As in the pictures are on '32 Chassis. That's going to make the proportions look different. I think they look great with the 32 frame and a heavier chop. With the stock frame, maybe a little less chop.

Great thread! I love the heavier chops to look at but would do a 3 to 4 for myself. My dad has a '28 Tudor with 6" and looks great but not very comfortable to drive. And I am only 5'8".

Awesome idea! Someone should do a post like this for A's on 32rails, etc to show newbs like me common frame swaps.

Cool thread for us visual types... think this is going to take a front and center seat in my favorites! Thanks for posting this up and taking the time to do it. The only thing I would add is a stocker in the first pic so you could compare the first chop height :D Great Job!

Being young and short a heavy chop looks great! Like previously said, so many 4" chops have been done that it doesn't look chopped to me.

A model a that I do will have a heavy chop and probably 32 rails. Also been said that it helps out proportion wise.

  19. Very cool thread idea !!

I just wish that "chop" was quantified by the amount left , or window heights instead of the amount thrown away.

Always bugged me - all 4" chops are not equal when finished.

Here is a kind of before and after, on 5".... Wound up 5 1/4 with cuts.. Last picture is to reference the stance... Channeled 2" I like this thread as it is a tough decision...

Here is mine if it helps on some one's decision. The first is a 3" chop I did when I built the car, than a yr later decided to take another 1 1/2 off to make it a 4 1/2 now. Also it is 4 1/2 channel.
