I am in need of a mechanical advance dizzy for my 51 Flattie. I have a line on a Mallory 275E but it is about $400. Should I go this route or "modernize"? Engine is dead stock except for dual 97's and it will have headers. Thanks!!
Ditto on the PerTronix (but then again I work for a division on them LOL) I want to see more pics of your Falcon!
I am going the mallory route. It just looks so much better in there than the alternatives. Hope I can get it to work. But that's hot rodding isn't it.
I use Mallory, but I've got a lot of 'em... Call Bubba. He's right there in Mallory, probably half price of what you were 'quoted'.
Just be aware, Mallory no longer exists. That's not to say you cannot get parts, but it might affect your ability to get them in the future. MSD (who acquired the rights to the brand) appears to be supporting some products, for now. Make sure you can get the parts that you need, and stock up, if you can.
Just hope the Hoffman Group doesn't get ahold of it! @Gimpy, I'm aware of that...it gets worse by the day. My son uses MSD, I've worked on friends' stuff with Pertronics. Good stuff when it performs. MSD is similar to the BMW electronics I was familiar with...but a spike wreaks havoc on the MSD. (more than a few experiences...) "When it is good it is very, very good; But when it is bad...it is horrid!" Some things you just never forget: When I was very young, an older woman 'had her way' with me...I never had the chance to thank her.
Nothing! The crux here is, "Can you still get 'em?" Mallory parts are harder to find lately. The main source (Mallory Electric Corp.) has been bought and sold, and the last 'owners' have been less than enthused about mfg. obsolete stock. Some former dealers have parts left, but they are disappearing...
What's wrong with the points ends up being the condenser as long as you can get an NOS or NOS replacement from someone like Blue Point. The ones available now are Chinese junk. It's why many of use have gone to the Pertronix which at least for me have been foolproof and everything looks stock if that's the look you want. Good luck.
Go with the Pertronix unit, I've got it in my 53 IH R130 and it works like a charm. I also have a half a dozen of them in my tractors on the farm. Beats the heck out of points. Try the Brillman Company for the Pertronix units. I paid less than $100 for each of mine. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Lots of advice to go with Pertronix. I need to get away from the loadmatic as I am running dual carbs. I need the mechanical advance so must change the whole unit. I have been to Bubbas site and while I have only heard good things, I don't really want a Chev unit powering my Ford. As far a the Mallory stuff goes, I just saw a 4004 cap on Ebay for stupid money. $169!!! That will be a problem down the road. I am using a Crane optical trigger in my Cleveland which works very well, but it's all tucked in the original distributor. I still need mechanical advance!!
Around here you can buy SBC two-piece cap Mallorys, even with a tach drive if you want, for $50 at most swap meets. Send it to Bubba for machining and recurving, and you will have the best of both worlds. Old looks and good old parts, not new Chinese stuff. Then pick up a couple more SBC Mallorys for spare parts at the next swap meet.
Reminds me of one that was in Peterson's Complete Ford Book back in 1973. Sorry about the crappy scan, didn't fit in the scanner very well
Something I've learned that most do not know. There is actually one 97 that has Venturi ported vacuum. There is a later version of the 97 that has a port for venturi vacuum. It reads Elmira NY on bowl and usually has a blank circle, ie no 97. These were made for stromberg at Elmira.
That white Falcon from the magazine is a big part of why I decided to build one! I've been drooling over that build since '73
