It's just amazing how many barn finds are showing up these days. I suppose a generation is dying off and the kids are clearing out the property.

This is the only surviving picture of the Schwammberger, built in 1950 by A.W. Mantzel, the editor of Das Auto. The front wheels are fixed and the rear wheel-drivetrain assembly turns nearly 360°, so there is no reverse. The only writeup I could find was in German, and said at one point that the axles were rigid, but in another place said that torsion bars were used front & rear. Only one was built. Schwammberg is a mountain in the Black Forest, which the car almost certainly couldn't climb...

Interesting concept of the rear wheel steering. From time driving forklifts my experience is that it tends to be on the squirrely side.

Yes Tom, and if you get tight up against a wall, it's difficult to move away from it without dragging the counterweight, or forks into the wall. Side shifter helps- but-- Also wonder if you had to keep track of how many times, and which way you spun the Schwammberger rear wheel to keep from twisting the controls off.

I think that I'll pass on that one.

Here's a Morgan publicity shot from the mid twenties. Its not as highly polished as an auto show chassis, so it was probably intended for publication in a British magazine alongside a drive test. I don't recognize the engine, though.

This chassis was never intended for the show stand ,rather it was built for the race track.see post #5253. It went more than 100 mph at Brooklands. Built by Harold Breats with factory support. SR100 the engine is a Blackburne.
