The engine in the Old Mad Jack post car is a Douglas motorcycle engine, either a DT5, or a DT6 depending on whether it was a 500 or 600cc when it left the factory. Crankshafts and rods are the first things to give trouble on these engines, my son can supply rods, and is (very slowly) working on replacement cranks. I'll ask him tonight if he knows anything about the car.

Sorry, should have read further before posting.

I know that he is familiar with Al't'cock

Fred VV44--your Onan is a much more rugged engine.

I am reminded of a story I once heard when I was dabbling in local triathlons. A gentleman had heard much this same story about drilling holes to make things lighter. So he drilled some holes in his bike frame. Apparently you could always tell where he was on the bike leg of the race because you could hear the whistling, droning noise his bike made as he approached.

    Hi,

This Ruby is not A7 engine but a French engine factory made by Mr Godefroy et Lévêque. They made different engines in the 20's/30's and equipped many french car make (BNC, Sandford, Sénéchal, d'Yrsan, EHP, Rally, SPAG and more...)

Four cylinders 750cc, 900cc, 980cc and 1100cc with sidevalve or over head valve and some with a "Cozette" supercharger.

It's an easy misunderstanding because "Ruby" was what Austin called the saloon-bodied versions of the second-generation Seven, from 1934 on. So, "Ruby engine" can mean either an engine from a post-1934 Austin saloon or an engine made by the French manufacturer a-c-h-i-l-l-e mentioned. They are wholly unrelated, but nevertheless equally likely in the context of cyclecars and early specials.

Bob, there has been licence production of European, American, and more recently Asian automobiles for many years. Ford began assembling Canadian CKD Model Ts at Port Elizabeth in 1924; GM began manufacture in the same city in 1926. Over the years there have been a few attempts at an indigenous car design. The GSM Dart and Flamingo sports cars of 1958-c.64 spring to mind:

Generally the culture at the time did not favour local inventiveness. The NP government of 1948-93 was generally suspicious of creativity. The business mind-set at the time was that a thing couldn't work if it weren't boring, a notion borne out by sales of off-white Toyota pick-up trucks under the influence of Say's Law. Now that we are no longer burdened with a government that regards all artists to be communist satanist homosexuals, they've discovered New Deal liberal-style regulation. We can't win :)

I know Studebaker (I'm a Studebaker guy) had a relationship with South Africa. You can read more about it here:

VW had an assembly plant there too at least in the early '50's.
