Hopefully this is a link to a video of five Model As, a 1924 dodge four and a sneaky flathead tourer sporting four extra cylinders blatting and slithering around in a swamp of a show ground, at the Gresford Mud Run last weekend.

Not much I can add to Crazydaddyo's post and videos. Except to reiterate what I said before , IMO Carbon steel is ideal higher grades of steel (4130 etc) will not give you any advantage for this, and will make the job longer, more complicated and possibly set it up for failure.

Hey guys, got a little problem with Dad's '31. The car is running rough lately, I suspect the distributor is at fault and now is the perfect time for an upgrade. I'd like to get a more reliable unit for the car without sacrificing a traditional look. It doesn't have to be an original distributor but there's no way I'll install some dorky Chevy HEI looking conversion either. What is the best option to go about this? I'd like to eliminate the antiquated manual spark advance if possible. I'm also trying to convince Dad that it would be much cooler (and hopefully easier to tune) with a 97 and a downdraft but that probably won't happen immediately. Shower me with your wisdom.

I installed a 32-34 B model in mine, also has weights to advance the timing, no more having to screw with
    the spark lever.

I was thinking something more along the lines of this:

I lifted this photo from The Ford Barn. The stuff is from HAMB'er GMC Bubba. Any thoughts on this setup?

Looks like you only got a link to the photo and if you aren't a member of the Ford Barn you don't get to see the photo contents.

That's strange, I can see it on my screen. How about this:

Personally, although hot rods are my passion, I think much of the charm of driving a stock Model A is the manual aspect of adjusting everything.... balancing the timing and the GAV/choke and the handthrottle , they add to the mystique when somebody else rides along too. In my mind eliminating these features on an otherwise stock Model A doesn't really hop it up and actually lessens the experience. I would agree with changing intake and ignition if it was part of a wider Banger hop up ...head, cam and lightened flywheel etc. I just don't think carb and ignition alone will alter performance much , but will make both hand controls into redundant decorations in the car.

    Muttly:

If you review the monthly Banger Links you will find how Gary Anderson of St. Paul posted how to acquire and modify this modern Mallory at home. In addition to the distributor you can purchase a Mallory advance spring kit to have the necessary springs to adjust the mechanical advance for use on the Model A or B motor. I'm using one pink spring and one gray spring to get the advance started early enough. The original application for this distributor was a four cylinder Ford Industrial (Pinto) motor in marine applications, so the advance curve was geared toward full throttle operation, which makes the original springs way too stiff to run on the street. I have one of these distributors in my hopped-up Model A and have had zero issues with it.

The car does have a lightened flywheel/V8 clutch and the Ford 'B' head. It's been converted to 12 volts. At 76 years old making it a little easier for Dad to concentrate on the road isn't a bad thing. Has anyone used one of those setups like I posted earlier?

For those of you that like to diagnose a problem they do make a nice little black box that tells you the KVA and RPM with a wave of the antenna....... MAC tools ustta sell them and they are on EBay. I have had mine for many many years.

My experience with newish Mallory products is they need a lot of work after you buy them and fail without warning.
If you have a Distributor machine you can dial them in. I like Petronix module placed in something old looking. They don't fail very often and are pretty much plug and play. I have one setup in my 39 that has provided me with trouble free service since 1990.

About the timing lever, If the motor is good and your not too fussy you can find a sweet spot and leave it ..... kindda like the mixture. Don't make it complicated.

The one and only time our 31 wagon ran rough it was the carb and not the ignition.

About advance curves ....... Well on some stuff I run a magneto ...... again set it and forget it. It has no advance off the starting impulse and the only negative I have seen is a drop in mileage. But again you must set the mag up correctly in the first place.

About being old and driving....... a year ago today I had a triple bypass surgery...... I am about ready to drive hard again. Old doesn't mean stupid unless you don't listen to what your body tells you. I firmly believe that DEATH IS NATURE'S WAY OF SAYING SLOW DOWN!

Driving a banger always puts a smile on my face but in the dirt it is even more fun.
This kind of driving makes me want to lighten the flywheel some more.

Mutley I have one of Bubbas on my banger and it has been doing the job for about 2 years now not one problem to speak of. If he has any on the shelf he can usually get it out to you the next day.
