I thought the same thing. I wanted to 3 window it, but after studying it for so long I decided this was the best route. Proportions are key. I wanted to take the "ugly" out of it, but keep the style the original designers were after.
The stainless and the wind wings are going to pose the greatest problem I think. I may just eliminate the wings......I still don't know.

Thanks Tony. I took those especially for someone who may be pondering this same thing on the same style car.

Some unsolicited advice Brant, don't get rid of the wing windows, the first problem is that the window opening is not straight on the outside edge, it widens at the front window channel point at the back of the wing window, you must straighen out that opening and make a new front channel for the new longer glass that is now really hard to balance on a regulator.

I wish that I had never done it to my 47

    x2 on the advise above..

windwindows bring in alot of nice cool air!!!

you might want to look for the other style of 46 - 48 window trim

this car has the simple "loop"

I would love to keep them. I just have no idea where to start with them. But, since I did take the top off the car I could probably figure it out.

Only one real question then. What is the best way to remove the glass from the surround?

In addition to the shit mentioned in my post it seems to kill the air flow in the car espically in the front seat.

It also kills the traditional look of the car.

    Hmmmmmmm.

Do you think they will let this piece of crap in?:D

I suppose my car would make all the others look that much better.

Thanks for all the looks and replies, helps with motivation.

I haven't been out in the shop too much this last week or so. I did finish the both door tops. As I did I also did the door alignment as best as could get without cutting the doors apart in order to gain that last 1/16 in. I think when I get to the body work I will be able to massage that. They open and shut like new or what I imagine 1946 newness feels like.

Yesterday I was messing with my photo bucket looking over some pictures of the car.

For comparison before and after shots.

I know the door tops aren't finished in this last pic.......:D

Well its progress report time again. Out in the shop for a few hours spot welding. Story of my life. Measure, cut, spot weld, grind, repeat.....Chopping tops is fun!

Here is the panel between the roof and the trunk, along with it is the rear window and some smaller patches for the rear quarters.

My question now is, what is the best, read easiest filler to use to make the skim coat cause I'm gonna put this thing in some sort of primer. I'll ask about that later..

Wonderful! How much did you cut out of it? We've got a $100 1941 Coupe that needs some body strengthening but the top will come down. We thought about hard topping it but after today's adventure in frame swapping, I think a roll of toilet paper has more strength!! Looks like we'll use some 1" tubing to shore it up, channel it, and THEN worry about the roof...but we can dream!

It is 1 1/2 in the A pillars and the rear is 2 1/4". :D

What frame did you swap it to?

    Thanks Grayson.

I am giving it my best shot.

  19. Looks great! the lines look to flow real well.

If I could add a bit of advice, make sure you weld all the inner structure as well. Like in the A and B pillars, dont weld only the outside sheetmetal, cut it open and get the metal in the middle. Gives more strength.

I would also like to add that keeping the vent wings will help make the car look great too! :)

  20. Great looking work....... You've got a good eye. Can't wait to see more.

The frame we put it on has the front and rear sections of a GM A/G car with just rails down the sides. The one under it someone decided to heat the springs to "lower" it so it was in the dirt for 20 years. Once we pulled the body off, it didn't look as bad as expected so we'll decide what to do. Probably just channel the body on what we have but who knows. It's early and my son is 16 with lots of dreams...

    Your work looks great

  23. Brant, try the Evercoat Rage series of fillers. Been many threads on it here for more details.

    Looks like a good profile.

That's what some other people suggested as well. I will do a search and check out the threads on it. Thanks.:D

  25. I just opened this thread, looked at the first photo of the unchopped car and started praying for a subtle chop. And you didn´t disappoint me. Great work - it looks just right.
