I use a bar of bath soap. Everyone has it, or at least should, and it works great.

 

Do you guys use new wax rings or recycle the old ones removed when repairing leaky toilets?

There are 2 types of toilet rings. The first is the one used to seal the bottom of the bowl to the soil pipe. The second is the ring around the bowl you get when it's never cleaned. Take your pick.
