P40 Everett WA. nothing there but a vacant lot now. Keeler's Korner in Lynwood WA. on old Highway 99 still stands. I grew up in the Lynnwood/Alderwood Manor area. Fun place to be a kid, very crowded now. Some fun reading on Keeler's if you look for it.

Ojo Caliente, New Mexico.....when I learned to drive on the street, this gas station was ISdwxnay60y4w80000000000.jpg ISpxq4cg9bamk90000000000.jpg the first time ever I legally put gas in with my own hands. In the early 1970's....it was painted green & white, and the owner was a very friendly fellow named Mr. Lucero,( he owned it and operated it from about 1959 I believe to about 1982) who let my family 'charge' a few gallons of gas till we could pay the 'next time' we came in for fuel on a ''tab system''. That "first time" fill up I ever did....I ''found'' a ''locking gas cap'' in the trash can next to this garage door in the picture, and I thought "I wonder if this will fit":confused:....it did!!! I didn't have the key, (nobody else did either) and my father was talking to Mr. Lucero about me driving so well at the time with high praise....needless to say, I spent a few sheepish moments trying to pry the gas cap off with a screw driver and a lot of mumbling, in front of them both watching!!! I was 15....so, I guess I can only say I wasn't thinking too mature.....I've never tried putting on another gas cap from the trash can since!!!....funny how an old gas station can stir up a lot of memories!

  9. Our old local taken in 53, it was pulled down in 67 and replaced by a new one. I used to call into this one on my way home from school and get stickers. The whole school went and watched a bulldozer flatten it, I was eight. JW

"Preserved Gulf station in Athens, Al.
One example of a preserved service station is the Newby Gulf Station in Athens. It was attached to the College Inn diner, frequented by students from Athens State College in the 1940s and '50s. But when U.S. Highway 31 was moved to its current location, it bypassed the popular hangout on Pryor Street and it eventually closed, leaving the buildings empty and neglected.
In 2004, the land was sold to First Baptist Church, which deeded the buildings to the City of Athens.
The two small brick buildings, built in the Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired Prairie style, faced demolition until local citizens stepped in to help find grant money to move, renovate and preserve the buildings. College Inn is one of only two Prairie-style stations left in the state, according to the Alabama Historical Commission.
The preservation effort spearheaded by former Athens City Councilwoman Milly Caudle resulted in relocating the station to 125 East St. near the corner of Hobbs Street. College Inn now serves as a free museum and is also used as offices for the local beautification organization."

My contribution to the thread is slightly off topic, since this picture is not "vintage" and this station never existed in real life. But it looks the part, and it has a good story. In short, this is what happens when your city engineer (who has been a committed "car guy" since childhood) gets to choose the design for the new public restroom downtown: he disguises the restrooms to look like a vintage filling station. Inside, there's nothing but an entryway and two restrooms. But the entryway walls are lined with historic photos of every filling station throughout the history of the county, and the whole place is decorated with fake "petroliana."

Now everybody who drives an old car through Torrington, Wyoming wants to stop and use the restroom, and snap a photo of their car out front.

After I took this photo, I saw my old buddy the city engineer at my high school reunion, and I told him I took this photo. He volunteered to follow me back downtown and unlock the fuel pump nozzle, so I could pull up under the canopy and pretend to be filling my car. This world needs more guys like him!

My buddy has several cool old cars, and his office is across the street from this restroom. On workdays he parks his old cars and trucks under the canopy next to the pumps, to add to the scene.

You're right, of course. I fixt it!

Now we just have to ignore the fact that the pump jockey is wearing shorts. Oddly enough, when we were in high school, that guy in the photo WAS a pump jockey, at a station only two blocks south of that spot.
