My mother used to stop at this ''fillin' station'' all the time, on Lombard St., Portland (St. Johns), Oregon when we visited my grandfather in the early 60's, who lived just around the corner....he knew the owner pretty well. 1963_shell-gas-station-on-n-lombard-st-at-n-portsmouth-ave-looking-north-vz-17-63_a2011-013.jpg

This is from the early 20's. My grandpa is in the center and his dad is on the right, doing the very first Captain Morgan pose.

  17. When I was about 8 my uncle had a gulf station & my job was to fill the oil bottles & place them on the island by the gas pumps.
I just sold my oil bottle collection with carrier, metal qt cans & oils sump with a pump that worked.
Back in the mid 70's while hunting in Dixie, Idaho I filled my truck up using a visible gas pump & the sidewalks were made of wooden planks. Had a pic but can't locate it tonight. Good ol windows 10

My first RPU was a parts chaser for a Veltex station in LA before we bought it. Had a big Veltex logo on the doors.

This one just closed down in our town this July. Got bought by a supermarket chain. I tried to get it preserved but there are too many corrupt politicians around. It'll probably get demolished, although there is still a chance the front half will be preserved. It'd make a lovely diner.
    I've filled up so often here. I always filled up my antique cars here. DSCN0909.JPG DSCN0910.JPG DSCN0911.JPG DSCN0912.JPG DSCN0915.JPG DSCN0916.JPG DSCN0917.JPG

Been trying to figure out what the sign at the bottom of the big window says?
You can see an outhouse to the right. 1928 or 29.

Another photo, same place. The muddy dirt road out front was paved 2 yrs later and became M -19.
The highway dept told my uncle that he needed to move the building back farther. He told them it was OK when he built it and if they wanted it moved they were going to have to do it.
So they did. WATEROWN_GAS_STATIONS_FROM_BRIAN_WESCH.JPG The Sinclair pic is from the early 60s.

I took this picture while on vacation with my folks, back in 1956 when I was 10-years old. I think it was in New Mexico or maybe Arizona................
