Technical Early SBC Carburetor Question!

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by brett4christ, Nov 25, 2014.

  1. I'm piecing together a tri-5-ish 283 for the Tudor. I want it to look as much loke a 265 as possible without the cash outlay. I have a 57 283 block (no side mounts) and a selection of staggered-bolt valve covers. I'll be keeping relatively close to stock. Where I may stray a bit is the intake and carb. I have a good GM aluminum intake from 62-64 for a 4bbl that I may use. What carb would be more fitting? AFB? WCFB? 4GC? Others?

It's not going to be a bruiser, just a cruiser. Thoughts?

My '57 283 is mostly stock. I am running an old GM cast iron intake with a 4GC Rochester.

Hmm, a 62-64 GM aluminum manifold? Are you leaving it aluminum finish or painting it?
If you're painting it, I'd use a Rochester 4 Jet, maybe one from an Olds or Pontiac if you want a little more air flow but keep the stock look. WCFBs are cool looking but I think they are all pretty small air flow-wise.
If you're leaving it bare aluminum, I'd use an early AFB, the small air horn version to make the engine look early. Or the large air horn version if you want a little later look.

  5. Agreed.

I am a '60s kid so even if I had a '57 283 I would have bolted an AFB to it anyway.

if you must go for the 265 look I would paint the intake and look for a WCFB or a Rochester 4 jet. ( I think I know where there is a 4jet from a Buick that could be had cheap).

Here is a thought, a quick and dirty upgrade for the little chevy was a 4bbl intake and a Rochester 4 jet from a Buick 364. (like say a '58 roadmaster). The intakes (chevy) and the Buick carbs could be had cheap in the wrecking yards back then.

what's the part number on your GM aluminum manifold?

  7. I don't have the part #, but I DO know its for a 327/340 out of a 62 big car. I'll probably pait it 265 red (not orange) to match the block!

EDIT: the # is 3795397, it was AFB from teh factory, so that may help make the decision...

I kinds like the idea of the WCFB ot 4GC. I'll have to look into that!

  9. Yeah, I literally fell into 4 old winters intakes; this one, two 327/350 L-79 units and an MO302 Z/28 (67-68). Solt the other 3 for a tidy sum and decided to keep this one!

  10. Sorry, that's an iron intake. Mine must be #3794129...

  12. My database says -397 is iron. Oh well....

  13. Pretty easy to tell if iron or alum, one weighs about 3x as much!

Second the use of a 4-Jet to be nice original style carb.

  14. I've been around enough to know Al from Fe....a magnet can help, too!

  15. i love the look of the wcfb, i am putting two on my car.
crazy how much they weigh! it will keep the front end down.

I also have a good C4B Edelbrock, so I may think about offering the GM unit up...

  19. Now, Back to carb questions.....

This C4B is Holley, so what of the earlier carbs will fit, preferably without adapters?

Ditto. I saved AFBs and ditched WCFBs.

If I remember right, the 4 Jet and WCFB had the same bolt pattern and the Holley and the AFB had the same bolt pattern. So with that manifold, I think you can only run the Holley and AFB without adaptors.

Yep, Larry ; but you know back then out with the old , in with the new. I put the AFB on my sisters 57 283 powerpack with what ever adapter was required. If I could have scored an Al manifold either Edelbrock or corvette, I'd have added that to the mix.

  23. We used to make adapters out of plywood. Cheap and easy.
Cheesy yes, but did they work you bet your sweet bippy they did.

  24. The C3B has a multi-bolt pattern so I'm back to maximum possibilities!

Leaning toward the 4-Jet for cost, unless there's a reason to avoid it...

  25. Brett, I have a nice 4G with the automatic choke that has the heat pipe going into the exhaust manifold. It has the original triangle information tag on it so I can try to find the year and application. I also have an Edelbrock C4B in the shop I can try it on tomorrow afternoon to see what adaptation is required if you like. I will snap a couple of pictures and post.

  26. What you want to use then, is a 340 hp 409 4GC if you can find one. It's bigger than the 283/327 carbs but looks the same...linkage and all.

  27. CB Chief, that would be great! Thanks!

I'll be on the lookout for the 348/409 units!
