Jerry Ruth was "the King," Ed McCulloch was "the Ace," so Dick Kalivoda became "the Joker," all from the Pac NW...

Gary, It's Good to have you back on this thread. I know Dick Kalivoda, but during the late 60's to early 70's I was occupied with Sand Drag Racing, and missed most of that period. I remember the announcer at Portland telling about a Tacoma Washington Sportswriter that gave the moniker to the Ace. He said there is only one card higher in the deck than a King, it's an Ace ! Here is a shot of Dick's old roadster from 1960. 13e_di_gammas arden (2).jpg

Dennis Martin at Fremont in his "Menace," presumably from the cartoon character. Later Dennis Martin ran a very well finished fueler, full body, etc ...same Dennis Martin?

Fred Cerruti again, in the Quality Auto Part fuel altered...

Gary Ritter of the "Blood, Sweat, and Nitro" team

Goodnight and Chaves at Fremont...before the blue paint...very nice Fuller car

    Gotelli.jpg
Denny Milani rolls to the line at Fremont in Gotelli's fueler

    Guascoat19.jpg
Before Pure Hell, 19-year-old Rich Guasco took his street roadster to race at Fremont...he didn't win that day but he would win a lot with Pure Hell, etc....and a later version of this roadster won the AMBR trophy at the Oakland Roadster Show.

Gotelli had a number of drivers, here Jeep Hampshire has a turn

Don't have an ID for this fueler at OCIR

Jr fueler at Pomona, no ID

  18. From Flyin Phil Elliott's FB page!"
"Imported funny cars at Mission B.C. on a nice mid-1967 morning. That's Richard Schroeder doing his thing during the "burn-thru" phase of a Chevy II match-up with Denny Syar, in the ex-Dickie Harrell car. By this time, both had gotten of of the 4-speeds from the previous season, replaced with far-more-reliable Turbo-400s, and both were capable of 9.30s/148-150mph.

  19. Da Winnaaaaas! NHRA Winternationals 1969. Top Fuel John Mulligan and Tim Beebe on the left. "Jungle Jim" Liberman and Clare Sanders in the center for the first "official" NHRA FC title. Top Gas winners Walt Austin and Dave Grassi are to the far right. Walt and Jungle are side-by-side.

  22. Bernie Wadekamper's match racer. It began as a factory lightweight legal A/FX driven by Tommy Grove for SF Bay Area Melrose Motors. It then spent 1965 in the northwest running hard for Hahn Motors (Yakima) before moving into the capable hands of Mr. Wadekamper. He ran it all over the northwest, match racing against whatever was thrown at him, other locals, even imported jetcars! Later, he had a tube front clip and axle put under it, and the engine was shoved way back into the front seat area. In this configuration, it ran a few times but soon he was hired to crewchief on Mike Miller's Dart.

  23. In the near lane is the Roy Watkins-owned, Gary Cromwell-driven Willys, that was a longterm build project in "Northwest Motor Sports." In the far lane is Jim Warter in the Anglia.[IMG]
