George "the Stone Age Man" Hutchinson at San Fernando...notice the plume on the helmet, taller than Gabelich's...and yes, he burned it off in a fire....

First, a couple from the George Klass collection:

    412428.jpg
This looks like Madera...#15 roadster is Waters and Murray, before it got one of the first sbc's in drag racing, still flathead powered in this picture...some of the SoCal racers traveled north to Madera to help the Madera Clutchers start their own drag strip.

    2936632.jpg
Art Chrisman in a rare shot with the full body on the #25 car.

    4107854.jpg
Burkholder Brothers, one of their first altered, notice that they kept the #202. This car, with a blown Olds, rolled and got badly wadded up, and the engine went into a Fiat...

    JChrismanHRMoct1954800b.jpg
Pomona, early '50s...sedan is probably still flathead powered here, later got an injected Chrysler...that is genuine Von Dutch striping on the grill insert...was also on the rear...when the car was found the Von Dutch on the rear had been cut out and I think that the grill insert remains lost...the car has been restored, but not in its original version...beautiful dark purple.

    5944567.jpg
I believe that this is Steve San Paolo, corrections are always welcome...he was from central California and raced a number of cars...

    6129150.jpg
Ted Cooper from Imperial Beach, CA, carbureted Lincoln...headers once ran over the front of the engine, made the cover of HRM, but heating issues caused them to be rerouted as in this shot...sort of a light metallic blue.

    sanford29.jpg
East Coast guys, help me out...I think that the Fiat is driven by Jack Doyle...Hi-winders Car Club?? It ran a blown Chrysler, gold colored, really well built.

I posted a picture of this 55 without an ID, one of you recognized it...here it is with full caption

  18. If I am not mistaken, Ted Coopers Lincoln powered Model A was known as The Alazan.

  19. Dont know how to post a reply to one of the pictures.
Post #45006 is Dennis Nash driving the injected Altered which belong to Roy Rowe from Caraway, Arkansas. The car used a 3 speed manual trans, using 2nd and high gear. This picture taken at George Rays Dragstrip

SOMEONE MENTIONED A FEW POSTS BACK OF THE WHEREABOUTS OF THE OLD TONY WATERS ROADSTER. I TOOK THIS PIC. AT HALF MOON BAY ON DECEMBER 8, 1963. THIS WAS THE LAST TIME I SAW IT. A FEW YEARS BACK I ASKED BOB McLENNAN IF HE KNEW THE OWNER/DRIVER THAT MAY HAVE ROADSTER NOW, BEING THAT IT FLEW CHAMPION SPEED SHOP BANNER BACK THEN. HIS RESPONSE WAS "LOOK AT THE NAME ON THE SIDE OF THE CAR". THE NAME THEN WAS RAY MATELLI. IF SOMEONE COULD DO A LITTLE DETECTIVE WORK MAYBE THE CAR CAN BE LOCATED.

This picture is actually from the "other" Brainerd, the one here in Tennessee. This was from the first Brainerd Optimist Drag Strip in Hixson, Tennessee. That drag strip moved to Ringgold, Georgia in 1964 and is still in operation, and the old track in Hixson is now a small airport. I don't have a driver's name on the car, but I do know that it was Chevy powered with a supercharger. This picture is cropped to isolate the '40, but it's one of my favorite photos from the Lost Drag Strips book, as a '32 Ford coupe is in the other lane and the flagman is in mid jump. Here is the original picture, which is from the Larry Rose collection.
