Our school bus would drive by Dickie Harrells race shop every day, was a sad day when we learned of his passing. I got to talk to him in the pits at kcir once, a nicer racer you couldn't find. He was the first drag racer I saw with a semi and trailer.

Gary Wood and Ron Colson. Later ran small block AA/GD with a four link so they were definitely into suspension stuff. The dragster was named Stiletto and Gary later used the name when he started building spindles and other steering components. Ron went on to drive the Peterson and Colson front motor top fuel car, the Chi Town Hustler and finally Roland Leong's Hawaiian before heading up the UDRA. I caught up with him at the PRI show recently.

Anyone know more about this Willys?

That '42 Willys truck was built and owned by Carl Hegge of Alexandria, Virginia. It was an old US Navy truck when he found it. Black lacquer paint, blue metallic interior, lots of chrome. Powered by a small block Chevy, Hampton blower and two port Hilborn. Trans was a Power Shift Hydro by Vitar. It was a very nice, quality build. I cut my teeth on drag racing by crewing on this truck in 67-68. In '69, Carl switched to another beautiful Willys, a '33. I remember talking to a fellow in the old Mid-America Willys Club, who had bought the truck as a street rod and was going to put it back to race trim. Lost track of him so I don't know if that ever happened.

This thread just keeps getting better and better each time I look at it.
Watching the Southern Gasser's run their events is like taking a trip back in time to the 60's

Rodney Singer in the Singer & Miller Lincoln-powered A/GD, won the '59 NHRA nationals against Jiggs Shamblin driving a blown Olds Bantam delivery-bodied C/C. Motor by Karol Miller, who had previously set records at Bonneville in a stock-appearing '56 Ford...cool photo, thanks for posting!

I knew a lot of Texas guys in the Navy during the early '60s...while they all knew and admired guys like Bobby Langley, this guy, Willis Ragsdale, from Pasadena TX was their real hero...this shot tells why
